"Charles didn't think too deeply about the morality of that kind of thing. What mattered was that these memes made his friends laugh and their laughter was a shot of pleasure and power and affirmation and love, a fighter pilot takeoff crossed with a slow motion squad walk, reckless and cool at once." p.39

When you wake in the morning, you might have a moment or two before the memory of what happened presses you to the bed and flattens your lungs. The weight of it will be so heavy you'll be sure you can't possibly sit up, but you're to have to. You're going to have to walk into the same school today, tomorrow, the next day, and the day after that, five days a week, six hours a day. You're going to have to move down those same hallways and take a seat at those same desks and greet the same people and try to be the person you were before. p. 120

WELFARE CHECK

Charles was talking about killing himself. He'd texted as much to his friend Otis, who kept trying to talk to the school administrators about it while they were interviewing him about the account.

"I was just freaking out and I was trying to tell them, like, 'Is Charles okay? Do you know anything about him?' And they kept trying to ask me, 'Who's running the account? Who's involved?'"

Kerry was worried too. She ran into Otis in the school atrium and they watched Charles walking out of the main office with his mom. He looked shattered.

"I just don't want him to hurt himself," Kerry said. She remembers how gloomy it was outside, even though it was spring. How great everything felt.

"I know. I'm really worried about him," Otis said.

Charles's mother was worried too. Before leaving the office, she'd told Anderson that she was concerned her son was having suicidal thoughts. The next day, three police officers came to his house to do a welfare check. Charles assured them that he was okay, and they left.

The day after that, the school recommended that he be expelled.

p129? On kindle
