Black face is something that has been around since the 19th century and it was where white men and eventually some women too would but a black substance all over there face and act like black people. They did this in movies, plays, TV shows, etc. The black people eventually did it too. People still continue to do it today. I think this is not something that is needed to happen still. It seems silly and stupid. It does nothing but upset black people and its not needed.

White privilege is something that was created and it's not okay that white privilege is a thing. It's a problem in this society that everyone can't just be equal and that people discriminate. Some people discriminate and they don't even know they're doing it and I think as a society we have stop and think before we say something and try and just catch ourselves before we say things that are offensive or discriminate because even though it's not good I think people are use to it and we shouldn't be.

Danger of a single story

Having a single story for someone is dangerous. It's having one strong opinion for someone which makes you think they are one way when you don't even know them and who they are. A ton of stories makes a person up but only having negative stories for someone makes you think only about those stories and you overlook the good stories of that person. Everyone has good and bad stories and a person shouldn't base their opinion on someone based on those stories good or bad. "A single story creates stereotypes" (Chimamanda) In Their Eyes Were Watching God, the people in Eatonville were talking about Janie, sitting around gossiping about her, having this one story about her and they don't even really know her. All they cared about was the gossip and the stories about her, when she is more than just the stories about her.

A couple named William and Ellen Craft decided to disguise themselves as a man and her slave so that they could escape slavery and go to a free state. They had to fight for their freedom and they are so courageous for what they did. Ellen disguised herself as a man and her husband was her "slave". They escaped and went to Philadelphia. After Philadelphia, they moved to Boston. Slave hunters arrived in Boston intent on sending them back to Georgia. They fled again, To England. They fought for their freedom and they could've been caught but they didn't and that what's really great about this story. They fought for their freedom and won.

Code Switch: Donald Trump being racist

Donald Trump, possibly has used the N-Word. The word is offensive and not okay to say, let alone the president using that word. Him saying racist things like the n-word shows that it's okay for other people to use that word when it isn't. He also calls different ethnic groups like Asians, names like rapists and offensive, non-human words. When anyone who isn't black uses that word, it's rude and discriminating against blacks and it's degrading. So, to have the president who people look up to, and who runs a lot of this country, say the n-word or being racist at all is just not okay. It sends out a message that it's okay to be racist and say whatever people want tosay, which is not how people should act.

Gender can't be ignored when dealing with domestic violence

Domestic violence is any incident of controlling, threatening behavior, violence or abuse, and that abuse can be emotional, physical, or sexual. Domestic violence is a horrible thing to do to someone and I don't know why people think it's okay to do. Both men and women do it, but more men than women do it. Like women, men can also experience long term damage to their mental health. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie experiences domestic violence from Joe Starks, emotionally and physically. Joe silences her voice and takes away her power like she is just an object for him.He also hits her when she talks back. It changes and damages her.

New grants help domestic violence in Colorado

Next year, two grants will be given to a local nonprofit organization in Colorado, to help domestic violence victims escape their abusers. It will help provide housing for the victims for a week up to a few months. This is so important to have for victims who may need help and are afraid to get it. More states should have more nonprofit organizations for domestic abuse victims and be granted enough money to help those victims. I think organizations are a step in the right direction to help end domestic abuse.

Ray Rice, a former football player was suspended because a video was released of him punching his fiance until she was unconscious. Ever since this story came out, people have been talking about why victims still stay with their abusers even after they are abused multiple times. Like, In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie is abused by Jody Starks and she still stays with him. It shows that the victims put blame on themselves, or love their partner and they don't want to leave. They don't have enough courage to stand up and even today that still happens and it probably won't ever stop.

Domestic violence and Police negligence

Domestic violence in Australia has received a lot of attention and it is shown that the police are the key to enhancing the safety of the women. But, people are having problems with police failing to respond and help the situation. They have found that given the amount of domestic violence that is happening, the police have to have higher expectations to be first responders in domestic abuse cases. It is really important that the police respond to a domestic violence call as quick as possible and help the situation. The police are the ones who can help end the domestic violence if the victim can't. Police are starting to be held accountable if they don' respond to domestic abuse calls and I think that's important because it's their job to help and save people and if they aren't doing that then they're not doing their job.

In Alabama, Billy Christopher shot and killed his mother, son and then himself. In Christopher's case, because there were no past reports on domestic violence, they are not ruling the case a domestic violence case but typically in a domestic violence case, if a family member kills another family member, even if there has been no past records on domestic violence, it is still considered domestic violence. The most common way police officers die during duty, is domestic violence cases. An estimated twenty two people an hour become domestic abuse victims. As a society, we need to help bring that number down. It is hard for victims to report their significant other and it is hard to end domestic abuse cases if the victim doesn't want to come forward. We should work harder as a society to prevent domestic violence and try and help victims come forward even if it may be hard for them.
