To compare and contrast humans and the nature

Can you think of anything that you can emulate from your surrounding nature to help with your daily problems ?

In my opinion, things from my surrounding that I can emulate is ant. I have a problem in which I like to do things alone and ends up I feel very stressful and overload. For example, if I have a lot of club activities (making paperwork, invitation letter, activity plan and etc) as I think by making it alone, it will be more easier but I am totally wrong. Therefore, I think I can emulate ant to solve my problem. Ants are a small creatures, however they can survive in this huge world as they work together. Every ant is like have been assigned task and the entire colony works together as one living creature to keep them alive. They work together to find, store and carry their foods. Moreover, ants work together to defense themselves from human, animals and the other colonies of ant. Hence, I can emulate ant by working together with other people so that I will not be stress whenever there is a lot of things to do. In the other hand, ants is a very smart creature in which they are always get ready to faced any weather. I could be like ant to always be ready to face any challenge in life

To relate biological solutions to human technological challenges

Form questions and suggest your own answers in the form of hypotheses for what the strategies you observe might be doing for the organism

Make the connection between the biological function you observe and possible technological applications in the real world

Questions
1. How moss grow on the rock

2. What makes moss keep its moisture

Mosses belong to a group of plants known as Bryophytes. Bryophytes have no roots, but they do have thin (one cell thick) root-like structure which serve for attachment and water absorption know as rhizoids. Some kind of mosses or Bryophytes attach to the rock by these rhizoids. Most mosses have very little resistance to drying out, and because most of the mosses are confined to areas which are damp and sheltered, some kind of rocks are suitable for them to live

Mosses are at their best when leaves are fully hydrated. Mosses absorb moisture and nutrients through their leaves. In other words, they consume rainwater and dust particles. Furthermore, mosses function like sponges, using their capillary spaces to hang on to water. They help to soak up rainfall, maintain moisture in the soil below and keep conditions around them humid. Therefore, we can observe that moss keep its moisture by using their capillary to hang on the water. This can be apply for technological applications in the real world. For example, rain water harvesting that can be install on the rooftops to keep the buildings humid and to store rainwater for later use.

The shape of umbrella which look like a mushroom in term of its structure. Moreover, canopy of the umbrella usually a nylon taffeta with an acrylic on the underside. Nylon is water resistant similar to mushroom in which mushroom have tinier hairs projecting upward. There is a certain time where mushrooms will eject spores when dew droplets skitter across a surface that is highly water repellent. In the other hand, umbrella does not work like mushroom in which some species of mushroom function to give nutrients to other plants, some of them are decomposers of plant and some species become a sources of food to human. Differ from mushroom, umbrella work to give human protection against sunlight and rain. In addition, umbrella cannot be recycled as it has been combine with other material during manufacture activity while mushroom is more sustainable as it can be nutrients to other plant once they died. Therefore, this inspired technological of nature has implication as it can lead to more material used and waste production

The thing that I found which work like the nature is cleaning brush. Cleaning brush work like cat tongue in which the main function to remove dust, hair, or any tiny particles that hard to be remove by hand. Cat tongue have structures which is hollow spines that called cavo papillae. The papillae wick saliva deep into recesses of the fur, and the flexible base of the papilla enable hairs to be easily removed from the tongue. The previous brush is using coconut fiber which it is less durable as compared to the latest technology. In contrast, the modern brush which made by polypropylene is more sustainable as it is more durable. Other than that, polypropylene brush is more effective in cleaning purpose as it can remove the dirt and hair. Polypropylene is stiff and low cost. It does not absorb moisture or odors and easily sheds dirt. Its wet stiffness with a non-brittle abrasive tip and inertness to solvents, oil, acids, and chemicals, makes it the most chemically resistant synthetic fiber.

Other than that, wood ladle is suitable for daily use compared to plastic ladle. This is because, wooden ladle is heat resistance so it can handle the heat. Wooden ladle is better than plastic ladle or metal ladle as it will not scratch the cookware. Moreover, wooden ladle usually is made from birch and bamboo. Both type of trees were relatively fast growing trees, hence they can be planted for the sole of harvesting. This will allow old-growth and other natural resource remain undisturbed.

To identify biomimicry at different scales

Consider how functions and strategies in biological and designed systems may change with scale

The example of biomimicry around me that copying natural process is paper bag. The process which both natural and technology have is compostable. Paper bag is made up of raw materials for which is collected by cutting the trees. However nowadays, paper bag are usually made from recycle materials such as sugar manufacturing residues, animal waste, and recycled paper as they are all excellent sources to make paper bag.
Furthermore, paper bag will be decompose and return to nature after being disposed. Compared to plastic bag that dwell on the surface of the earth and the sea beds for million of years. All types of paper bag either it is white paper bag or brown paper bags, flat bags or sos bags, all biologically degrade and turn into natural fertilizer for plants and trees.
Moreover, paper bags are emission-free this means that it less carbon-emission as the bag are made from locally-sourced recycled paper pulp.
All the attractive facts should be the reason to our commercial industry to shift from plastic bag to paper bag usage because paper bag coming out more cleaner and greener.
