History: From these introduction we learn that the Devil's highway is an area or road many migrants follow. Though maybe not preferable they go through this area in order to illegally cross into the United States. The locals in these areas are starting believe that gods haunt this area. It's most likely do to the harsh conditions of this area and perhaps even when the first recorded death took place. Even now the highway is the cause of hundreds of deaths each year. These people walk on these roads and endure harsh conditions but some may never reach the end or return back.

The men: The chapter cuts to five men walking throughout the Devil's Highway. These five men were unfortunate enough to be separated from their group rendering them lost. They're dehydrated and almost near death due to the inescapable heat on the highway. When arriving in an area known as the Vidrios Drag they hope to find border patrol. They wanted to get help for themselves and the group they were separated from. When found they were asked how many followed behind but they couldn't give a cohesive response. They would jump from seventeen to thirty and eventually one even believed there were 30 men behind him.

The Border Patrol: Despite being glorified half the time these agents aren't well liked. Many communities despise them as the arrest and rescue of immigrants stopped the success of any person they caught. Especially agents of some latin origin as they are seen as traitors for stopping their own kind. Many of these agents are ex-military as well. Despite it being their job they would rather leave out bodies to decompose than to fill out a report. They are also known to harass and abuse their captives.

The Yuma 14/Wellton 26: Dragging is explained on how immigrants crossing avoid their tracks to be followed. Tracks are especially looked for to see whether or not people have been crossing recently. Though dragging can be a problem for border patrol as they clear up tracks in order for them not to be followed. After finding 5 men in the Devil's highway the agents find out about the deaths of fourteen others who were traveling with the five men. Despite finding bodies they are barely recognizable and have little to no belongings to be identified by.

Still refusing to rat out the gang Mendez faces the unavoidable prosecution. He plays a major role in the Yuma 14/Wellton 26 so any attempt of even calling out the gang would simply mean he loses everything he has. His mother and girlfriend. Meanwhile the chapter cuts back to the bodies of the walkers. More money was being spent on them dead rather then alive when they needed the help in their communities. Back to Mendez during his prosecution he makes the final decision. To plead that he is guilty and serve his 16 years in the US.

After sending Mendez to jail the chapter goes back to the men. They are able to stay in the United States. They're all offered jobs to stay in a meat packing plant. They would never have to be in such horrible conditions in the sun again. The aftermath of the incident had allowed for the US and Mexico to better relations until 9/11. After such event they tightened security and every agency worked in attempt to protect the borders from every single possible threat. However even then that would never be enough to stop the deaths continuing at the border.

After the Yuma 14/Wellton 26 there were new additions to the highway. There were new water stations, safety towers, and emergency shelters. This only emerged after said tragedy of course. However this wouldn't please those who believed that undocumented immigrants were a problem. They saw them as people who cost the taxpayers and drained the system. However data against this idea shows that said immigrants actually bring more to the economy rather than take from them. However this is still an issue that is still discussed.
