7. While Vu is allowed to ride a bike to school, mother says Kim Ha is to young to ride a bike, and must walk instead.
8. Kim Ha thinks that the guy sponsoring them is a cowboy, because he has a hat that looks like the cowboys she watched on a movie.

Mother

2. Mother made baby clothes in hope that she can earn a little more money.
3. Mother made an altar hoping that the father would one day return.
4. Mother guilt-tripped Khoi into leaving South Vietnam with them.
5. Mother is very cheerful, even if things in her new house are very different from her old house.
6. Mother is grateful for all the things that the cowboy/the government has given them, and tells Quang to do so as well.
7. At Mother's new job, she is getting her hands hurt from sewing.
8. When Mother thinks Kim Ha is sleeping, she chants and openly wishes that Father would come back.

Khoi

6. Khoi's little chick dies while Khoi tries to get on the boat to safety, and Khoi becomes sad after releasing the chick to the sea.
7. Khoi is being bullied at school, as well as Kim Ha.
8. Khoi has been riding his bike with Kim Ha to home and back from school.

Vu

5. At school, Vu gets tripped, and almost kicks the boy who tripped him, but stops before anyone gets hurt.
6. Vu, after not wanting to see Kim Ha cry, agrees to give her self-defense lessons.
7. Brother Vu now wants to be called Vu Lee.
8. Vu Lee now is flipping burgers after school, giving people their newspapers and teaching people moves from Bruce Lee.

Quang

8. Quang, at his work, had fixed a car no one else could at work.

Father

Miss Washington

2. Miss Washington used to be a teacher, and is now offering her personal tutoring for English to Kim Ha and her brothers.
3. While Miss Washington is teaching Kim Ha english, she discovers Kim Ha is eating lunch in the bathroom, and says she will change that.
4. Miss Washington comforts Kim Ha while she is saying that she hates everyone, making her feel better and get out of it.
5. Miss Washington, in an effort to help Kim Ha remember more english words, gives her a little treat every time she remembers a word for an entire day.

The Cowboy

3. Gives Kim Ha's family an apartment with 3 months of no rent.
4. The Cowboy, who was told by Miss Washington that Kim Ha got bullied by Pink Boy, tells the principle so that Pink Boy will apologize to Kim Ha.
5. The Cowboy, every now and then, will bring a little treat for Kim Ha and her family, one time even being some chips and chocolate.

The Cowboy's Wife

5. When the Cowboy brings gifts to Kim Ha's family, she never comes with him.

Steven/Pam

4. They help Kim Ha get away from a beat up from Pink Boy's sister who is older than them.
5. Steven, Pam and Kim Ha sit together at lunch, instead of Kim Ha eating in the bathroom.

Miss Scott

4. Miss Scott gets everyone to pay attention and applaud Kim Ha when she says the A B C's, embarrassing her.
5. Miss Scott singles out Kim Ha, asking her to talk about Vietnam in front of the class.

Pink Boy
