Washington, anticipating a battle, protected the Northern front of New York that he believed was going to be attacked, and he positioned a great amount of his troops on a point of high ground there. General Howe received word that there was a way to go around these troops, and he used this to take New York effectively. He put Grant and Flatbush to attack Washington's front, and they broke through by finding another weak point at Sullivans front. Howe went behind the front and attacking Long Island directly. This was incredibly effective in quickly capturing New York without losing many men.

General George Washington commanded the Continental Army with Putnam, Sullivan, Sterling and Chester commanding different areas of the front. While General William Howe commanded the British military, with Grant and Flatbush commanding separate British and German forces. While General Washington did lose 2,000 troops in the battle, his leadership and bravery got the rest of his army out of New York and saved his men. Howe's leadership made overwhelming the rebels easy, as he had two other commanders creating a distraction for him, however he did not capture Washington, while he easily could have.

Losing New York was devastating to the Continental Congress as it was a major port and meeting place of forces, when this happened they lost their foothold in the north east. It also forced Washington to evacuate New York, and they lost many troops and artillery resources in the battle.

George Washington commanded 10,000 troops while General Howe had 20,000 troops. This battle started and ended on August 27th 1776, with Washington evacuating his remaining troops across the Delaware River. Washington lost 2,000 troops while Howe lost 200 troops. General Howe had artillery and a small cavalry, while Washington had only a small artillery and no cavalry. Washington did not effectively use his resources, as he positioned very little men in New York, while at the same time leaving a large hole in his major defense.
