This article study aims to find out about cooperation between Universities and firm-level TI of firms by focusing on Automotive and Biotechnology sectors in Malaysia, which is to enhance the U-I linkage. This scope of this study is about the mediating effect of KT channel and KT barriers towards technology innovation (TI) between Automotive and Biotechnology sectors. The analysis was carried out using sample data of 198 firms which 118 from Biotechnology and 80 from Automotive were selected for analysis. The outcome for this studies show a significant but between perceived importance of universities and firm-level TI, which indicates that firms have used universities in Malaysia less than their perceived importance. Secondly, the sequential effect of knowledge transfer KT channels and perceived barriers fully mediate the relationship between universities and TI which have a negative influence on TI. Thirdly, the perceived importance of universities when viewed together with KT channels and perceived barriers, explains and predicts firm-level TI, which was significantly different in the two sectors. The automotive firms reported higher perceived importance of universities than biotechnology firms in research, teaching, and entrepreneurship.

It was carried out using sample data of 30 firms with ISO firms each in two sectors. The data were collected through a survey financed by the International Development Centre(IDRC) in 2009. The overall response rate using face-to-face interview was 70%(211 firms) with a breakdown of 85%(127 firms) for biotechnology and 56%(84 firms) for automotive. However, after removing the outiers in the data, only 198 respondents(118 from biotechnology and 80 from automotive with 79% and 53% usable respectively) were selected(66%) for analysis. This research produced three main results. Firstly, the results analysis shows negative association between perceived importance on universities and firm-level TI. Secondly, the results displayed the sequential effect of knowledge transfer(KT) channels and barriers fully mediated between universities and TI. Lastly, the perceived importance of universities when viewed together with KT Channels and perceived barriers, explains and predicts firm-level TI, which was significantly different in two sectors.
