In 1867, the Secretary of State, William Seward, arranged for the United States to buy Alasks from Russia for $7.2 million. Some thought it was a silly idea and called the purchase "Seward's Icebox" or "Seward's Folly". Time has show how smart it was to buy Alaska for 2 cents per acre since Alaska is rich in timber, minerals, and the most important oil.

Hawaii was economically important to America even before Hawaii was Annexed into the United States. Since America did many shipment of sugar into the United States from Hawaii the American sugar growers wanted to avoid import taxes ( Tariffs ). Even thought one reason for the United States to Annex Hawaii was for the sugar you could produce their but their was also another important reason, Americans needed Hawaii to build a naval base to refuel their ships on their way to and from their destinations. The United States did just this in 1887, the naval base was called Pearl Harbor. In 1898, led by Snaford Dole, America annexed Hawaii, and in 1959 Hawaii became an official state of the United States.

Theodore Roosevelt had a diplomacy called the "Big Stick" Diplomacy. What this meant was to intimidate your enemies to get what your want.
The result of Roosevelt's diplomacy surprisingly leads to little battles since during that time period not many countries wanted to go to war with America since we had a strong Navy. Whenever Roosevelt decides to make the Panama Canal he sent the Navy off the coasts of Panama and asked nicely to set the small country free of Columbian control and since they did not want war they back off and gave them their freedom which in turn allowed Roosevelt to begin on the Panama Canal.
