During the abolotionist movement, the United States was divided. This division even occured within families. Fathers, sons, cousins, brothers were on opposing sides. An example of this is seen with two brothers, Alexander and James Campbell. Read this excerpt from the book "Him on the One Side and Me on the Other" by Terry Johnston. 

With a partner, I want you to imagine that you are these two brothers coming face to face in battle. You both believe in what you are fighting for with a passion. Both of you feel like you are fighting for what you believe is best for your country. Abolitionists like Frederick Dougglass are speaking out against slavery, fighting to end it. The Underground Railroad is in full effect as slaves start the treacherous journey to freedom. Tensions continue to rise, states continue seceding. And you and your brother are on opposite sides. One side fighting to abolish slavery, while the other fights to sustain it. What do you do? How do you feel?
Write a letter to each other exploring these feelings. Work together. You do not have to pick sides, simply write a letter to one another about how you feel. When we are finished, volunteers will have a chance to read their letters to the class.
Use these prompts to guide your thinking:
How does it feel knowing that your family does not agree with what you believe?
What would be your response if you knew you were fighting a battle against your own sibling?
What are some things you could do to maintain your relationship?
