In the Afterword in the book "Lost Boy, Lost Girl: Escaping Civil War in Sudan", John mentions why he wrote his part of the book and why he did the movie. "I do these things because I have benefited so much from my life in America and I want to share goodness with my homeland. I want to help make a better future for Southern Sudan." He wrote his part of the book because he wanted to help the other people that are still in Sudan and he wanted to inform people about the troubles he had when he was in Sudan.

When John was accepted to go to America, he was followed by cameras to be interviewed about his journey and the transition to America from Sudan. He was glad to have been chosen because of the results it had. The text states, "Through that movie and a book of the same name, lots of Americans got to learn about the Lost Boys for the first time. I was glad to be apart of that film and book because of what it did to raise awareness about Sudanese refugees." He was very glad that he was part of something that helped many people learn about the situation many Southern Sudanese people were in or are in so that they could pay more attention and maybe help. One purpose John had while he was writing this book with Martha was to raise awareness as well as help the people that are still in Sudan in the place he was in before.

John shows what he went through and how he felt to shows us what really happened in Sudan in his eyes. The book states that, "This is the end of my life! I'm going to die". This was said by someone he was looking after, he knew that all of them had a chance of dying and him saying that made it more true. Saying this tells us, that this was a hard journey with a small chance of survival. John also shows us his point of view by telling us how he was unprepared fro what happened at the beginning. The book says, "At the time, I did not know much about my country's history." John was young, so he didn't know what was coming. The text also states, "I did not know how tough our journey would be...had no food or water. I wore what I had worn to bed, which is to say I was naked." These quotes from the book show that he was very unprepared for the journey ahead. One of John's purposes for writing his story was to show what happened from a primary source and someone who actually lived the terrible situation he was in.

Another purpose for John's writing was to show other cultures, especially America that some other countries are less fortunate and these kind of events are actually happening. We think that it was mostly targeted for Americans because many of us are more fortunate than others in other countries. He wrote his story to show us things that actually happened and are still happening to teach us to be thankful for the things we have and not to take anything for granted. One way he shows this is by telling us how he was unprepared he was for the advanced technology and the richness of the U.S. The text states, "Nothing I had learned in Kakuma had prepared me for the fast pace and richness of life in America." This shows that he did not know much of the lifestyle of America. In America, we are fortunate to have such advanced technology. All of this could look shocking to someone that has never seen things that we are taught are normal. This teaches us that we should not take things for granted because in other countries, they may not have the things we do.

His first time in America was hard for him because he has to get used to the new culture and the technology there. The book states that, "They gave me advice on how to succeed in America, yet I cling to my Dinka ways", at first he did not want to do the American way and wanted to do the Dinka way. He was surprised about some things in America that they did not do in Sudan. "There were huge crowds of people going in every direction. And they all move so quickly!", he is used to them all walking the same direction at the same speed and not everyone going different directions. This shows the adjustments he has to make in his new life. A purpose John showed was how difficult and different it was to change his lifestyle from what he had known for a very long time to the advanced lifestyle of America.

In the book, Martha talks about her feelings throughout the book and what troubles she went through besides the war. "The thought and the loss of our friends and relatives at Gilo haunted us. It was another darkness we had to live with. We felt hopeless". They were scared for their own lives, but even the things besides the war scared and haunted them. The book says that, "A man in his late forties, older than my own father would have been, wanted to marry and began coming to our house. My uncle would tell me to go sit with him, and the old man would tell me that he liked me". Martha, besides the war, had to get through the man and tell him that she did not want to marry, even though he kept coming and coming. The test also states, "But i wasn't paying attention to any of that. I was just a girl of five, playing with my sister and my friends, expecting life to go on the way it was forever....happy days...disappeared forever...got scared..." This shows that Martha was unprepared because she was very young and didn't really care and what she was feeling when she suddenly had to leave her happy childhood and home. Martha wrote her part of the book to show what she felt and had to deal with during her time in Sudan.

Another purpose for Martha's writing is to show how difficult the transition to America was. When Martha was on the plane to America, the book says, "...I was just too frightened...We ate the bread and butter separately, ate the dry lettuce leaves, and drank the little container of salad dressing." Martha had never been on a plane, so she was scared and did not know what was going to happen. American food is also different than Sudanese food, so they didn't know what to eat with what. The text also says, "We were used to Dinka houses-all enclosed with just a little crack or door to let air in. We felt lost in that house." This shows that the American culture is very different than in Sudan, so they had a lot to get used to.
