In prehistoric times, most likely water was carried in woven baskets lined with river clay. After the water was poured out of the container the layer of clay dried. The loss of moisture caused the shape to shrink and separate from the sides of the basket. When the clay, now shaped like a pot, was removed, and dried in the sun on hot sand, it retained the basket pattern. Early men and women then discovered that they could harden the molded pottery in hot ashes and make sturdy containers to transport and store food. The largest museum library in the Republic of Croatia is a part of the Museum.Museum of Slavonia is located in the old Baroque core of the City of Osijek – Tvrđa. Today the exhibition spaces are located in the two buildings on the Holy Trinity Square (Trg Svetog Trojstva), in the Main Guard building and the Magistrate building.

Yesterday was an extremely exciting day for all of us!

Our project team - Izabela, Mia, Lorena, Nives, Mhaela and Sandra - got acquainted with the clay treatment technique, the ways of making pottery vessels and for the first time worked on a (Power-operated) potters’ wheel.
Our leader of the workshop, Mr. Miroslav Benaković, was an inexhaustible source of knowledge, and so patiently and carefully explained every part of clay treatment and the creation of pottery vessels. Mr. Miroslav Benaković and the preparator, Kristijan Wolfl, demonstrated to the students the work of the potters' wheel.
We thank the Museum of Slavonia for the wonderful experience, the great atmosphere and the knowledge we received.
