Protagonist Analysis by Brittany Collins

Write the title of your book as the title of your post. Then write about one trait that your protagonist shows and give textual evidence that supports that trait. Make sure you cite page numbers, and also put your name at the end of your response so you'll get credit.

One trait that protagonist Hercule Poirot shows, is cleverness. This is exemplified when Poirot is interviewing suspects for a murder, and finds out a key clue to the murder. That is, that one of the suspects left a bolted door unlocked on the train, when getting off at a train station. The quote is, "By which door did you leave the train? By the one nearest to our compartment. The one next to the dining-car? Yes. Do you remember if it was bolted? Why yes, I seem to remember it was" (88).
By: Julian Lu

One protagonist from the start of the story is Fiver. A prominent characteristic about Fiver is that he is very quirky. Often times, he constantly freaks out over what appears to be nothing important, even getting a small group of rabbits to leave their "warren" because he felt something was coming for them. At one point he told Hazel, "'There isn't any danger here, at this moment. But it's coming - it's coming. Oh, Hazel, look! The field! It's covered with blood!'" Hazel then responded with, "'Don't be silly, it's only the light of the sunset. Fiver, come on, don't talk like this, you're frightening me!'" (15) -Deacon Mayock

His name comes from a set of initials, K.L. on a knife from a time he doesn't remember, and his Antari magic only belongs to two in all three worlds. He's emotional and unforgiving, but loving, and reckless over all.
Working for the royals of Red London, he's to carry messages between the rulers of the other worlds, but he uses his advantage to illegally smuggle trinkets from each world. "the drawers in the dresser were filled with boxes and in those boxes were treasures from every London," (55).Not only that, he saved his adopted brother Rhy from a group of traitors even when his blood magic has not been mastered, and ends up slitting his wrists over and over to heal his brother. Continuing, the basis of his new adventure, his recklessness has him returning to Black London, a world sealed because of the corrupted magic, to protect his Red London.

The older kids will get put on better tams, practice more, and ultimately become better than their younger counterparts even after they all have stopped growing because they have more experience and practice.
-Bobby Wynn

The narrator refers to the heroine and main protagonist of this book as Cassandra, or Cass for short. The reason behind this is that the narrator is not supposed to be telling the reader the story in the first place. “But remember these aren’t their real names and faces…If you don’t like the name I choose, change it.” (6). Cassandra, unlike the cursed prophet princess Cassandra from Greek mythology, is not actually a prophet, but resembles one due to always predicting disasters (hence the narrator’s use of the name Cassandra); the contents of this eleven-year old’s backpack, from trail mix to a plastic knife (because a jackknife is definitely not allowed in school), show that she is prepared for a sudden disaster to befall. This is why she refers to herself as a survivalist. Despite her constant readiness, none of her predicted disasters ever came true. “There’d been no earthquakes at school – none strong enough to shatter a window, anyway. The mildew in her mother’s shower turned out to be just that – not the killer mold Cass predicted. And that child spinning around on the grass did not have mad cow disease – he was just having a good time.” (lucky number 13) Cassandra is constantly reminded of the boy who cried wolf, “but Cass knew the true moral of the story: that boy was right, there really were wolves around, and they’d get you in the end if you didn’t watch out. Better to cry wolf over and over again than to never cry wolf at all.” (14)

The second protagonist is referred to as Max-Ernest. He was born with two names because is parents were unable to agree on a single name. “Finally, a nurse threatened to put their child up for adoption if they didn’t reach a decision…the argument left them so bitter and angry that they got a divorce as soon as they left the hospital with their baby.” (30) This talkative eleven-year old boy really likes jokes and riddles. “[Max] had read the joke – really a riddle, if you want to get technical – in one of his seventeen joke books, and now he was trying it on each of his twenty-six classmates in turn. None of his classmates laughed. Or even smiled.” (26) He is fond of paradoxes, riddles, puzzles, and word games; he liked math, history, science, and any other school subject that you can think of. It is also mentioned that Max-Ernest has some sort of mental illness. “The first expert said he had attention deficit disorder. The second expert said the first was out of order. One expert said that he was autistic, another said that he was artistic. One said he had Tourette’s syndrome. One said he had Asperger’s syndrome. And one said the problem was that his parents had Munchausen syndrome. Still another said all he needed was a good old-fashioned spanking.” (28) My first impression was Asperger’s syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism, because I immediately recognized multiple common symptoms. “Little understanding of the abstract uses of language, such as humor… Obsessive interest in specific items or information (this may have died down during the course of the novel) …want to be involved with others. They simply don't know how to go about it… they may be teased and often feel like social outcasts… Forming new friendships may become increasingly difficult.” (webmd.com) I am not saying that he definitely has Asperger’s syndrome, but I noticed that the author formed Max-Ernest’s character around key symptoms of Asperger’s; he even hinted at the bad-parenting-causes-autism myth. “For [Max-Ernest’s mother], apparently, Max-Ernest’s father did not exist. And vice versa…Max-Ernest explained that although his parents were divorced…they lived together – but they kept every aspect of their lives separate, including the décor of their home.” (55-56)

<del>Don't mind the really long post... ha ha</del>. SUFFER

        -Emma Davis

Craig Gilner, the protagonist of this book, is a 15 year old boy with some problems he tends to internalize. Craig suffers from depression and at such a young age doesn't know how to deal with it at first. After almost killing himself, he calls the suicide hotline and admits himself to the adult psych ward of a nearby hospital. Craig's most dominant trait is his creativity. He draws brain maps because they are 'simple'."I do them and they're done. It's almost like, you know, peeing?" (390) He eventually uses his artistic gift to make others happy inside and outside the hospital.
-Rose Chusid
