When using task-based learning, teachers lead their students to perform situations pretty much authentic or resembling “real-life”. Knowing all the irregular forms of the past tense will not help them to communicate clearly unless they know how to use them in the context. To achieve this, students need to practice, make mistakes, be corrected, and repeat. Performing a task is a good way to learn how to use language in a situation that is likely to actually take place.

The task-based lesson is based around the completion of a central task and the target language studied is determined by what happens as the students complete it. The lesson follows certain stages. Also, it focuses on the authentic use of language for genuine communication and on asking students to do meaningful tasks using the target language. Thus, tasks can be real-life situations and have a pedagogical purpose. It’s important to mention that task-based lesson has a clear purpose: learners should know the outcome they are expected to produce when they finish performing the task.

Sometimes called ‘Task-Based Language Teaching’, TBL lessons students solve a task that involves an authentic use of language, rather than completing simple language questions about grammar or vocabulary.
