The word can be broken down into two; no difference. It means to have no difference or opinions on a matter. Or to simply be ignoring it. In some contexts indifference like a neutral country, does not harm anyone, but in many other instances, indifference can cause death, wars, unfairness and suffering. It’s like J.K Rowling said

“Indifference and neglect often do much more damage than outright dislike.”

The other day i was at the grocery store picking something up, and of course, the self checkout was asking if i would leave a tip. I did not. Then the next question was if you could leave a tip for sick kids, and just as fast as the first tip i said no. Now that i think about it, i feel a pretty guilty for not even having paused to think about it. At the time, it was just the thing i had done so many times and that others had probably done aswell. I was indifferent to the pain of the kids that were in the hospital, because it didn’t affect me, and because of habit. Maybe if i had given a bit of the change i had left, i would have felt better and contributed to those in need.

I live in Collingwood. The town of collingwood is a big tourist town where skiing, hiking, swimming and all sorts of attractions exist. Yet with all that money being spent on tourism, there are close to no municipal actions happening to help the homeless that are in desperate need of homes and food. Homelessness is on the rise in collingwood and everyone has at least once seen someone with a sign on the street. But the whole town, is turning a blind eye to it.

There are talkings of 22 million of provincial funding to go to Simcoe county to help prevent homelessness 💸

We need to keep the shelters and programs in our communities thriving and we need an expansion of resources available at the programs. Like showers, food and a job list for local businesses in need of workers to put their names down.

We need to get the ball rolling and we need the municipal government’s support for these programs and we need the right actions to be taken with the money we’ve received.

And finally, we need the people of our community, including me and you, to at the very least let them know about the resources available! We don’t need the responsibility of giving food or money to every single person you see on the street. It’s not a one person job. It’s by the strength of a community that we will help prevent homelessness.

This indifference has deep roots because of the state the canadien economy is right now. Including the inflation that has gone on since the 80s, the economy is looking like it’s headed towards a recession. Especially because of the fact that the canadien dollar is worth about only 0.73$ right now.

We need the systems that are available already implemented in some stores, where they have part of the income to the store that goes to sick kids.

We also need more awareness about the fact that the customer’s contribution goes to sick kids so that the indifference turns into a known problem that is being solved.

Businesses need to be aware of the problem and the impact they are making by contributing and donating towards the health of the children. They also need to be aware of the sales advantages that make customers aware of the impact they are making every time they make a purchase at their store. This will encourage businesses to fix this indifference to sick kids.

There is a constant barrage of imaging and news of suffering, death and pain of others. This constant barrage tends to desensitize people. It makes people feel like there are too many awful things happening in the world for you to do anything about it. This makes people relate, and care less about things that show up on the news leading to psychic numbing in some cases. It develops habits of indifference.

The media has been so focused on all the bad that’s going on in the world, when maybe it’s time to start flooding the media with all the changes that are being done for scientific discoveries and developments in the world.

Good things in the media and the news could, for one thing, cheer people up and also help people feel like things are being done to help people.

Homelessness is not something you can avoid seeing, and is commonly ignored by people because of the uncomfortable and fearful reality it makes people face. I have walked and driven by homeless people many times and haven’t thought about giving anything because i always just think “I don’t have that much money either, and I need to use it for other things”. This makes me more and more indifferent because i see this so often, and i know i can’t do anything.

There are many homeless people around the world and as the economy gets worse and it gets tougher to live, the number of homeless people increases.

We need to let people know about the other ressources that exist and are in development! Individual people won’t be able to fix all of homelessness.

The town of Collingwood, as i said in my previous example, is a tourist town. That means that there are tons of tourists coming up north to their chalets or to their Air Bnbs and party. Most of these tourists litter and throw all sorts of trash out their windows of their cars and all over the town! Its awful! But, since it’s been happening for so long, and it’s happening all over town I pretty much do nothing about it.

Pollution is a big issue in Collingwood and has been for a while. It’s just not an issue that the municipal government thinks about.

There should be fines for all the people who pollute the streets of the town.

There should also be signs on the streets to warn tourists about pollution, and the fines that will be charged by the police.
