In a collaborative effort, administrative staff and teachers together should decide what students need to learn. Students may also be involved in the process, as learning should be student-centered and applied to their interests in order to keep children engaged and learning authentic.

How do you define curriculum? How do you think it should be developed?

Curriculum is the content which determines the skills a student must master. It should be developed by administrative staff and teachers with students in mind. Curriculum should be student-centered with teachers acting as facilitators to help assist students in reaching their goals.

Yes and no. In an ideal setting, I think curriculum could involve a broad, overarching goal for all students to achieve, but it could provide differentiated standards to be met for different students based on their own abilities. Although, through objectives, activities, and assessments, this is where differentiation can take place.

I think our charter's handle on curriculum aligns well with my philosophy. Teachers are provided with standards to be met within a period of time, and we are able to decide the way in which we want to teach the standard to fit the needs for our students - rather than having a specific program in which you must use the stories and worksheets and assessments provided to you.
