They believed largely in predestination saying that all events are willed by God and if you deserve to go to hell, you will. In the text, "Sinners in the hands of an Angry God" , it said,"...they have deserved the fiery pit, and are already sentenced to it..." This had an effect on the style of Puritan Literature by using imagery to describe hell, and describing how predestination is an unavoidable concept.

Through the use of imagery, a straightforward writing language, persuasion, and facts to create fear and guilt, both texts were able to share the importance of God and all the Puritan beliefs and values. Because of the religious practices and culture of the Puritans, it created a unique style and content of Puritan Literature.

Puritans believed that God is a necessity to life and without him there is no life. He holds all power and should be abided to, or else you don't stand a chance. "If God should let you go, you would immediately sink and plunge into the bottomless gulf..would have no influence to uphold you and keep you out of hell." This was quoted in "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" creating a use of imagery, forcing the reader to feel fear and guilt.

The Puritans believed that God held power over all life and good fortune were to come if he were in a good mood and right actions were made. Jonathan Edwards stated "There is nothing between you and hell but the air; it is the only power and mere pleasure of God that holds you up." Not only did Edward's literary style of a straightforward language show how God was helpful and a protector of his people, but so did William Bradford in "Of Plymouth Plantation" with, "..and thought themselves to get out of those dangers before night overcame them as by God's good province they did."

Another Puritan belief was that everyone had sin. They found a way to convince the reader and persuade them to change as a person based off of the fear and guilt they left them with. With all the available consequences, it affected the way the literature persuaded individuals to change. "O Sinner! Consider the fearful danger you are in.." (Edwards. Pg 91)
