the tropic of Capricorn city marks the most southerly latitude at which the sun can appear directly overhead. This happens at the December solstice, when the southern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun to its maximum extent. by Meghan

An easy way to think of it would be to consider them the latitudes at which the sun's rays hit the Earth's surface at a right angle both during Summer and Winter solstice (marked by the longest and shortest days). At the start of winter in the northern hemisphere the sun's rays are only hitting the Earth's surface at a right angle (meaning the sun is directly overhead) at the Tropic of Capricorn. During the northern hemisphere's summer the sun is directly overhead if you were standing at the Tropic of Cancer.

The band around the Earth bounded by the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn define the 'tropical latitudes' (or simply the 'tropics') where it is possible to have the sun directly overhead.

By Beatrice :)

Three of the most significant imaginary lines running across the surface of the Earth are the equator, the Tropic of Cancer, and the Tropic of Capricorn. While the equator is the longest line of latitude on the Earth (the line where the Earth is widest in an east-west direction), the tropics are based on the sun's position in relation to the Earth at two points of the year. All three lines of latitude are significant in their relationship between the Earth and the sun.

THE EQUATOR

The equator is located at zero degrees latitude . The equator runs through Indonesia, Ecuador, northern Brazil, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Kenya, among other countries . It is 24,901.55 miles (40,075.16 kilometers) long. On the equator, the sun is directly overhead at noon on the two equinoxes - near March and September 21. The equator divides the planet into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. On the equator, the length of day and night are equal every day of the year - day is always twelve hours long and night is always twelve hours long.

THE TROPIC OF CANCER AND THE TROPIC OF CAPRICORN

The Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn each lie at 23.5 degrees latitude.
What is the significance of the Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, Artctic Circle and Antarctic Circle ?

The Tropic of Cancer is the circle marking the latitude 23.5 degrees north, where the sun is directly overhead at noon on June 21, the beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere. The Tropic of Capricorn is the Circle marking the latitude 23.5 degrees south where the sun is directly overhead at noon on December 21, the beginning of winter in the northern hemisphere. When the lines were named 2000 years ago, the sun was in the constellation of Capricorn during the solstice and Cancer during the summer solstice( hence the names). Now due to the precession of the equinoxes the sun is no longer in these constellations during these times, but the names remain.
The equator is the circle where the sun is directly overhead at noon on the equinoxes. The Arctic and Antarctic Circles are located at ± 66.5 degrees latitude. Note that 66.5+23.5 equal 90 degrees. This means that on December 21, when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn at noon, it will not be visible from the Arctic Circle. So above the Arctic Circle, there is a period during the winter when the sun remains below the horizon. The same is true of the Antarctic Circle during southern Hemisphere winter. On June 21st, when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer at noon, it is not visible from below the Antarctic Circle.

By Amelia

They do not have winter or fall ,only hot season and rain season.
All the rainforests in the world are located somewhere between the tropic of cancer and capricorn
When the lines where named 2000 years ago, the sun was in the constellation of capricorn during the winter solstice and cancer during the summer solstice (hence the names). Now due to the movement of our axis the equinoxes happen during a different season and the sun is no longer in these constellations during these times, but the names remain
By Clara

These two lines encompass the tropical areas of the earth. This means that on at least one day of the year the sun is directly overhead at a 90 degree angle. At the Tropic of Cancer this is on 21st June. The Tropic of Capricorn gets the sun at the 90 degree angle on 21st December. Between the two lines the length of the day does not vary much, there is no real seasonality of the weather. You get dry seasons and wet seasons instead of Spring, Summer , Autumn and Winter. Tom Hvass
