• Best way to assess a students spelling is to analyze their independent writing journals. 
• Having a student with a learning disability write or draw a picture about something they are interested in, is a good way to assess their spelling skills as well as their writing skills which includes grammar and punctuation. 
• Spelling is mainly taught as a testing skill rather than a communication skill. This will help a child’s development in linguistic knowledge.
