A lot of the people in the camps became desensitized to death and knew their time had come. When the first boy was hung many people didn't feel remorse for him and he wasn't scared too die. When the second round of the boys were hung the two older ones were fine with being killed, but the younger one didn't have a easy death and many people were upset with such a young person dying.

We learned from the book that no one was safe from being punished by hanging if you broke the rules. In Auschwitz, If you couldn't work you were burned, if you broke the rules you were hung. This was applied to everyone women and as we saw in the book children too. Making this treatment even more cruel.

This treatment and punishment was cruel and unfair as everyone was subjugated to the same punishment. This same for all punishment became more cruel as the people on the receiving end were not accounted for and that resulted in things like strangulation and not breaking necks like hanging should. This is why the little boy at the end was treated with the worst punishment as he suffocated, taking up to 30 minutes to die.

These two quotes are from the aftermath of the two different hangings that Elie saw so far in the camps. The first one the man stole something and didn't fear death and everyone knew that but were still disturbed. The tried to calm themselves by distracting themselves with the soup, and it worked. The soup was the best he ever had. The second execution was different though. The second one resonated with him and disturbed him even more than the first one so when he went to distract himself with the soup, It wasn't enough so the soup tasted horrid.
