This is a small Nordic island where 100% of the electricity comes from a renewable energy source producer by heat from volcanic activity under the surface and the force from the magnificent cascading waterfalls.

One of the most unique things about ICELAND is that there are Extreme geothermal activities . The combination of volcanic activity and cold climate give the Iceland the nickname “Land of Fire and ice".

In the south Iceland there is a small village called Laugarvatn and on the edge of town there is a geothermal wellness center. They have a tradition: baking a rye bread in the springs outside where the sands are boiling. After putting all the ingredients togheter, they cover it beacuse the hot springs water doesn’t get inside of it and in the end they put the bread under the sand.

There there is the big hot spring. They use it to heat up all the houses in the village and the pavement.

In the southern part of the Island two of the great continents meet: in fact Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are connected by a bridge. The friction from the shifting plates releases magma that causes an incredibile amount of heat to be releases and work its way up to the surface. This is the catalyst to geothermal energy.

There are four geothermal plants in Iceland. There they convert the geothermal energy into useful electricity. Before they collect the steam, then they convert it with big rotors and rotor blades. So the steam enters the turbine, and then It starts to rotate and you can turn the rotation into electricity. Every turbine produces 45 megawatts that can run 45 000 homes. But there are also some downsides: the magma contains CO2 and hydrogen sulfide. In that plant, they are taking most of gases and re-injecting them into the rock, where it mineralizes, so it forms rocks. When the steam turns the turbines, the water CO2 is collected, diluted in water and piped deep back into the Earth. There, it chemically fuses to the porous volcanic rock below the Earth’s surface and solidifies, so it never gets a chance to harm the atmosphere.

It isn’t about the strenght of the iniziale hot. Turbines work whit constant pressure that is turned into power.
