I tried to make a module template for our lecture topics in values formation. It was challenging, but I considered this as an opportunity to develop our skills in writing a module. We planned to make an easy and informative module relevant and appropriate to the PDLs' capability and knowledge. We also thought that this module serves as a supplement for the lecture conducted every week.

This task made me think innovatively and use the resources I had in professional education and PCK courses.

The overall demand of the program was indeed a challenge for me. Since we are dealing with PDLs, our lectures and values formation material must be coherent to their situation. Because for me, I have to be vulnerable and less technical in imposing a certain value to their systems. Although the group agreed about a certain topic, I decided to take another route in narrating a certain value that has been affecting me recently. I want them to know how significant that value it is to me and to my family. I also want them to know that my intentions are candid.

On the scheduled day of my session, the jail that I’m assigned to experienced a shortage in electricity. Due to that I wasn’t able to share my lecture directly to my intent audience, which are the PDLs. Fortunately, we are accompanied by the jail officers and some medical frontliners in the session who willingly participated throughout the entire session.

Since that was my first time handling the whole entire session, I wasn’t able to do it flawlessly. But the important thing is, I and the participants, enjoyed it a lot. And for me, that’s what matters the most.

Before even this new modality started, public speaking is not foreign to me. Upon engaging with the values formation, I was able to manifest it that allowed my participants to also show vulnerability in engaging and sharing their own stories. I was also able to formulate my own flow of discussion and participate in a group discussion with my SSP teammates in formulating the scope and sequence of the values formation. For me, the mentioned skills that I have and earned are indeed beneficial for my growth especially within the academic field. As a future educator, I must not only strive for technicality and objectivity. I must also consider the spectrum of life and the art of authenticity in vulnerability.

During my first values formation, I asked my participants how often they check or catch up with their families and vice versa. One of them, a medical frontliner, told me that it’s obviously a part of her job. She always allots a time to check on the PDLs and the officers. But when I asked her if she also have the same commitment in keeping up with her family, I saw the blankness in her expressions stating no. Then I come to realize that we’re all engulfed with different prisons in life. On her case, she is prisoned to her job and none of it is wrong. But we have to realize that time is our greatest enemy. Although we are limited, there are overflowing possibilities we could make in our time. Now, my challenge to myself is how would I like my story to be narrated?

Aside from this work is mandated and specifically designed for the program, integrating my own personal life with my PowerPoint presentation is indeed a lot to process. I’m not really that transparent in teaching values and concepts. I’d always like to keep away my personal life from my academic endeavor for I believe that, that’s the prime definition of professionalism. But this opportunity allowed me to humanize myself. It allowed me to center myself in a system where my life is an instrument for people. This was also challenging because the first week of SSP coincided with our exam week. It's kind of difficult for me to balance SSP, exams, and other commitments. I was actually unable to attend the initial meeting with RJ Caritas because it happened to coincide with my major exam. But I appreciate RJ Caritas for understanding our situation.

To deal with this sort of situation, I believe that proper and effective time management will enable me to balance my time between all of my tasks while preventing exhaustion. It is nevertheless important that we perform our tasks in a healthy manner in order to achieve a successful outcome.

My adaptability was put into practice during the first week of SSP. There have been several changes to the tasks assigned to the livelihood team, and given that it was also finals week, I was fortunate in being able to keep up with the changes. Although starting again from scratch is challenging for me, it allows me to be more adaptable and ready for new changes. Having this skill allows me to be willing to learn, taking on new challenges, and making adjustments to accommodate our team's transitions. This will empower me to better support my team and handle the impact of new challenges in the future, when I enter the corporate world. I also believe that adaptability is highly valued in practically all organizations, given the uncertain aspect of every industry and business.

As part of the livelihood team, I chose to discuss how to properly label products. One of their struggles in the livelihood program, according to RJ Caritas, is product labeling. Because the products are not properly labeled, they sometimes get confused as to how much, how many, or from which jail these items belong.

During my preparation for this particular task, I discovered that labeling the products is important for more organized, clear, and efficient operations. Caritas - RJ was having a hard time classifying and identifying the products that were brought to them. It is because the products comes in different features, colors, and prices.

The first week of SSP tested my time management skills. Since we still have exams and final requirements at school, I need to organize everything and allot a time for each. Our team is falling behind and we have a lot of things to do.

Communication also became helpful for our team to assign tasks and be mindful of the things that we should do. We need to value this throughout the program to have a smooth arrangement with RJ.

The Livelihood Team didn't meet the PDLs for the first week and we don't really have much interaction with the RJ unlike the Values Team. The only specific incident or experience that we have was the meeting with Sir Anthony. During that meeting, we were able to make things clear and point out the problem that needs to be solve. We were also able to see some of the works of PDLs that are being sold in the market. And it was good to see their works, it was nice and beautiful. We also joked of commenting "mine", "how much" and "free shipping" while sir Anthony shows the item. I think this helps us to know more about our PDLs.

Recently, I noticed that I have an unconscious bias in gender, specifically on straight guys. This notion also affected my decision in choosing my schedule for the SSP program, because I preferred the female PDLs over the male ones. Part of me justifies that choosing the mentioned schedule and specified participants was the best route to take, considering also the goal of the program; Part of me argues that men are just overrated. But I decided that this notion has to be eradicated from my system, so I decided to switch my schedule and capacitate our male PDLs. Upon doing so, I’ve discovered so much in me. Because if I do support SOGIE Bill and my community, it is indeed ironic for me not to overcome this bias of mine. Surprisingly, the male PDLs are more transparent in sharing their personal experiences. They’re also participative and I can see the eagerness in them to surge against their current situation.

Hearing most of their stories, revolving around how much they repent losing time for their families was indeed heartbreaking. I remember one of the PDLs, named Armando, shared that he has no contact with his family for five years up until now. And I know that this situation is not only unique to him, because I do know that our system is flawed.

During this week, my creativity was tested. Since I volunteer in making my team's presentation and Meet The Team part in our portfolio, Canva and MS Powerpoint were my companion. I need to be creative in choosing designs and templates. It's hard because I'm not that really good in editing but I really enjoy this kind of work. As I said to my team, this is a tiring work that I wouldn't regret doing. I've learned and continuously learning in this field while working with our outputs. My works are not perfect but I love it (I just hope my teammates and PFI will also love it).

Since I’m already done with my main task for the SSP which is to create a module for the PDLs, the only thing on my plate this week is the content of my values formation session and my strategy on how I’m going to effectively deliver it. Creating the content of my presentation was indeed a challenge since I have to be sensitive about my topic which is freedom. But as soon as I incorporated my heart in it by sharing some of the social issues that I’m really passionate about, I began to find my track and kept going.

Anthony informed me that the PDLs that I’m going to handle are not that participative especially those who are at the back. This information challenged my system a little bit, but since I’m not new to this kind of atmosphere, I know how to somehow handle it. But in my surprise, during my session the female PDLs at the back were actively participating. And when we’re on the sharing part of the session, they are also the ones who recited.

As I focused on the song "REMEMBER ME" sang by Miguel to Mama Coco, I emphasized that the PDLs family will not forget them. They still remember them despite what they have done in life. The sins they have committed do not define who they are today. Just continue to change for the better because their families are waiting for them to see the new and better version of themselves.

To be honest, I had some adjustment creating this presentation because I am used to create lectures for my co- biology student. The presentation I am usually creating is content-based and focuses more on facts, processes and mechanisms. Creating my first presentation about values formation wasn't that easy because aside from the fact that this is a different topic, I also have a different audience to consider --PDLs.

Nevertheless, It was a successful lecture and I feel like the presentation I have created is effective to my audience.

This hour of waiting makes me want to back out because I was apprehensive and already overthinking everything. "What if they don't want to take part? What if they don't pay attention? What if they don't grasp what I'm saying? What if I could have an internet issue as well?" But Sir Anthony helped us relax by simply conversing with us and telling jokes while we waited. CJ also assured us that he would be present, so there was no need to be worried. As a result, the lecture and exercises were completed satisfactorily.

I learned a lot through interacting and listening with the PDLs. First, despite being detained, they know how to be grateful. I was astonished by how grateful they were for simple things, and it made me think that if these people are grateful even when they are deprived of their liberty, who am I to complain? Second, they always care. We know they did something bad at some point in their lives, and we should also be aware that there was a reason for their actions. Even if they appear to be a "bad person," they still care for their family, friends, and officials inside the jail, as well as other PDLs. Just because they did something wrong in the past doesn't mean they will always be the bad guys. Inside the jail, they're also trying to change, to become a better person. As Ben&Ben said, "Pahilumin ang mga sugat. Di ikaw ang 'yong nakaraan."

My last session was with the Mandaluyong City Jail – female dorm. With this in mind, I knew that I have to deliver something close to their hearts – their families. Their current struggle in coping up with how their life turn out to be, needed a concrete support system. Talking about other people’s family is indeed a sensitive and a tricky topic to talk about. This fact gave me a hard time formulating the content of my PowerPoint and the context of my examples and approach as well. It’s also given that all families are unique, but I know that there’s one thing that every family share – to give love and to be loved. And from there, I started now to create the outline of my presentation and delivered a vulnerable session as much as I could.

During our module presentation, Sir Anthony suggested that the livelihood team can join CJ at his last Values Formation talk with the PDLs. We also wanted to meet them so we agree and decided to join. But on the day of meeting the PDLs we were all got nervous. We're scared to talk and don't know how to address them. That is the first time we will meet them and we don't have any idea of what will happen. Luckily, we have Sir Anthony and CJ who supported us and assured us that everything will be fine. And we did, we were able to talk to them and forget nervousness. The 1 hour of waiting for them is worth it.

Just like what I shared to the PDLs during our meeting with them, their family will always remember them whenever and wherever they are. The song "Remember Me" at the Disney movie Coco, is a reminder to us that no matter how far our family is, we can assure that they will always remember us. The PDLs inside also found their family there and respected each other and I know that as they leave that place, the people they've encountered inside will be remembered by them. I've learned a lot from their stories and it was nice meeting them.

Perhaps, not all of them committed sin for a senseless reason. Our society has defects. We have to go beyond and address the roots of why people come up with these mistakes.
