Studies show that too much screen time can be damaging to kids; pediatricians tell parents to limit a child's screen time to 2 hours per day. Studies show that kids are on a screen anywhere between 6-8 hours a day. Schools are pushing 1 to 1 devices and demanding more tasks be done with technology (ie screens). Where is the balance? I think this is an important disconnect that needs to be addressed on a larger level.

*Not all schools have 1:1 devices or equity with technology.
*In our district it's highly inequitable with technology and resources and also with buildings.
*Is it practical that we want all students to be experts in every area?
*We should have developmentally appropriate expectations and tasks
*.

*What about teacher engagement? At one of the elem. schools, teachers get to teach a subject they are passionate about "Innovation Day" and students sign up to take the course with a teacher/subject of choice. It's going very well (now this will happen 1 time per month) e.g., coding, robotics, yoga, legos.
Each class has a lesson plan and 3 "must dos".
Multi-age grouping. Each child signs up for 4 areas.

The more we can support and encourage eachother to be innovative and try new things, the more we will see this practice become contagious. we need to be open minded to take a risk and do things a different way.

Same with our new teachers (mentees). We need to encourage them to be creative and be the innovators when they are suddenly paired with a team that resist and say, "we've always done it this way."

We need to think about not just transferring the "task" but the process, the thinking, the product. We have to include ALL students ( multilingual learners, students with different abilities, etc.) in this type of work and not be afraid to let kids take some of the lead, even the littles.
