The PE Team reflected on how SEL is woven into the fabric of our daily lessons. This is due partially to how we construct our plans but more heavily influenced by how we facilitate them. We also discussed how Audrey's activities connected with us in terms of our approach to teaching students how to take risks, work together, communicate in a variety of ways and collaborate to solve problems.

Robin Fitton, Allison Grann, Margaret Flinton, Elizabeth Fortier and Alicia Giannelli developed a lesson that includes a book read aloud followed by a whole group discussion, an interactive greeting activity, and a song. This is the first lesson of a book series and larger curriculum based around social emotional learning with We Thinkers.

After creating this lesson and reviewing the materials we already have, we are planning on starting this unit with the 4's. We are definitely going to include these weekly lessons starting in September, but are looking into/discussing how it can be incorporated with our current group.

It is great to take a PD day to focus only on SEL. Social Emotion Learning is so important to help students foster crucial life skills, to understand themselves, to help develop a positive self-image, to learn the importance of responsibility for their actions, and to build healthy relationships with others. It's great to be in a position to make a difference and talk about how we plan to explicitly teach these skills. These life habits help foster healthy communities.

It is hard to be inclusive if you aren’t also respectful, caring, and kind. -RAK
