Create a new document

On the File tab, select New.
Select Blank document, or double-click a template image.

Or press Cmd+N (for Mac) or Ctrl+N (for PC).

Open a document

Every time you start Word, you'll see a list of your most recently used documents. If the document you're looking for isn't there, select Open.

If you're already in Word, click File > Open and then browse to the file's location.

When you open a document that was created in earlier versions of Word, you see Compatibility Mode in the title bar of the document window. You can work in compatibility mode or you can upgrade the document to use your current version.

Save a document

Save your document to OneDrive so you can get to it from anywhere – at work, at home, or on the go. Or save to another location, like your desktop.

To save a document for the first time, do the following:

On the File tab, select Save As or Save a Copy.
In the Save dialog, select OneDrive, or browse to the location where you'd like to save your document.
Update the file name.
Click Save.

To save your document as you continue to work on it, click Save in the Quick Access Toolbar.

Print your document

All in one place, you can see how your document will look when printed, set your print options, and print the file.

On the File tab, click Print.
Do the following:
- Under Print, in the Copies box, enter the number of copies you want.
- Under Printer, make sure the printer you want is selected.
- Under Settings, the default print settings for your printer are selected for you. If you want to change a setting, just click the setting you want to change and then select a new setting.
When you're satisfied with the settings, click Print.

Add and format text

Add text

Place the cursor where you want to add the text.
Start typing.

Replace text

Select the text you want to replace.
- To select a single word, double-click it.
- To select a line, click to the left of it.
Start typing.

Format text

Click on your new blank page and type some text.
Select text to format and choose font options on the Home tab: Bold, Italic, Bullets, Numbering, and more.

Add Pictures, Shapes, SmartArt, Chart, and more

Select the Insert tab.
Select what you want to add:
- Tables - choose Table, hover over the size you want, and select it.
- Pictures - select Pictures, browse for an image on your computer, an online stock image, or with an image search on Bing.
- Shapes - select Shapes, and choose a shape from the drop-down.
- Icons - choose Icons, pick the one you want, and select Insert.
- 3D Models - select 3D Models, choose from a file or online source, pick the image you want, and select Insert.
- SmartArt - choose SmartArt, pick a SmartArt Graphic, and select OK.
- Chart - select Chart, choose the chart you want, and select OK.
- Screenshot - select Screenshot and select one from the drop-down.

Change margins

In Word, each page automatically has a one-inch margin. You can customize or choose predefined margin settings, set margins for facing pages, allow extra margin space to allow for document binding, and change how margins are measured.

Select Layout > Margins.
Select the margin configuration you want, or select Custom Margins to define your own margins.

Resize or move pictures

To resize a picture, select the picture and drag a corner handle.
To wrap text around a picture, select the picture, and then select a wrapping option.

Insert pictures

Click the location in your document where you want to insert a picture.
On the Insert tab, click Pictures.
Select the option you want to use for inserting pictures.
When you find the picture you want, drag it from the Photo Browser into your document, or click Insert in the file browser.
