One aspect of Google that can elevate student learning, specifically in my science classroom, is giving students an opportunity to research a scientific topic with their peers, have students collaborate on a project with their peers and their present that information to the class. My plan is to incorporate more student centered research in my classroom using Google. One feature I would like to incorporate is YouTube Playlists where students create a playlist of videos on a specific topic. This will serve as part of the research component where students can collaborate with each other on making the playlist. Likewise, students can then collaborate on a way to present the information either through Google Slides or Google Forms.

After reviewing Google's Fundamentals Training site for Unit 1 and 2, I was able to gain a surplus of information on how to effectively implement ideas from Google into my classroom. I have learned many new things from reading the information in Units 1 and 2, however two ideas stick out that I was not aware of before. One of the features of YouTube allows educators to put together a collection of videos through YouTube Playlists. As a science teacher, I am always showing my students videos on scientific concepts and topics as well as trending current issues that relate to science topics we are learning in the classroom. YouTube Playlists is such a great tool to implement in the classroom, but it is also a great tool for students to use as well where they can research a specific scientific topic and create their own playlist with videos they think pertain to what we are learning. An additional idea I have learned from Unit 2 are the resources and help tools Google provides educators to continue to grow and learn professionally. Prior to reading this information, I was aware of Professional Learning Networks, however I have also learned that Google offers Google Educator Groups as an additional tool for educators to continue their professional development.

Google amplifies student voice and as well as student choice in all classrooms. This is one area that of education that I am a very big proponent of. By giving students a voice and choice in the classroom and their learning experience, I find that students are much more inclined to complete the work, they are more engaged in the lessons, and they show much more of an interest. Google amplifies student voice and choice by giving students various opportunities to contribute to the learning going on in the classroom. Because Google offers so many tools, students by default are given a voice and choice in the classroom. For example, the collaboration tools Google offers amplifies student voice and choice because they are able to create a product that demonstrates their learning. Students are given autonomy in the process and are able to be creative by putting their own spin on the method in which they choose to present their learning.

I think Google Drawings is a way for students to elevate their learning. It is a great tool to allow them to be creative and gets them away from the standard question/answer format. It helps other students demonstrate their learning through a different outlet, which suits other learning styles. Google Drawings can be a great tool for graphic organizers, which can support students who struggle with writing. It can also be used when making organizers while practicing ELA skills such as cause/effect.

Sites it extremely customizable and easily accesses Google Drive, as well as embeds links from outside websites. By showcasing their best work, students can recognize and improve their weaknesses and be cognizant of the skills with which they succeed.

Rather than just complete a structured worksheet, write a typical book report, or take a multiple choice test - students can use many of the different Google platforms to show their knowledge. If teachers are willing to allow their students to be creative, students can use Drawings to show their math work instead of doing a worksheet, can create a Slides presentation instead of a book report, and can use Forms to both take a quiz or even create their own. These platforms allow students to be more creative and expressive and students can really show what they know.

Google amplifies student voice because it allows students to tailor assignments to them. Students can ask a question, research it, ask others in the community about it and put together their own ideas about it, even publishing their own ideas on a Blog, all from google. Students are more likely to engage when learning is meaningful and connects to their everyday life. Google brings the outside world into the classroom to forge that connection.

One aspect of google that can elevate student learning is Google Drawings. I personally would use Google Drawings in my classroom because I teach a kindergarten class and I feel that my students would benefit from using this aspect of google in many ways. I would use Google Drawings for a math lesson where my students can create a chart with shapes, text and images. Students will be able to respond to an activity by drawing, typing or using images to represent their answers. I feel that this aspect of google would be appropriate for my students for all different learning levels because it will assist with my students at a lower learning level to draw their responses, as well as assist with my higher level students where they can answer using the text feature or to show their creativity with their responses.

I have learned new ideas and findings that I was not aware of before reviewing the material on the fundamental site. I learned a lot about the Google for Education Help Forums to assist teachers with finding answers. The Google for Education Help Forums are made up of a group of educators who ask and answer questions related to the use of the programs within the Google for Education tools. I think this is a great feature to the website because as teachers, we are always trying to “keep up” with the new technology and programs that we learn about in professional development classes. With that being said, when we implement these new programs in our classrooms, it can be a little overwhelming and we might come across a road block where we have a question but don’t know who to ask in order to move forward. Using the help forums creates an opportunity for teachers to have their questions about these new programs answered quickly and directly. It is nice to have support from other educators that make your “learning journey” easier so you can successfully integrate these google programs in your classroom.

Google amplifies student voice and promotes the use of technology all in one. Google amplifies student voice by creating an opportunity for students to learn new concepts, ideas and understandings with the technology world that google provides. Google provides so many options and resources where students can take ownership of their own learning and design and create the way they want to respond to their assignments. I think that google provides opportunities for all students, but also assists with students who are shy and hesitant to participate verbally. I feel that this provides a chance for these students to show what they know using the google features where they can answer, share and collaborate their ideas. I really love how many options you have as a teacher and as a student to assign activities and answer with many different choices as how you respond. I think google should be used in every classroom in order to amplify every student’s voice in the classroom.

We are currently studying signs in our community and covering topics like what do signs mean and where do we find signs. My students have enjoyed using Google Maps and searching for places in their community. We even took it a step further and went into street view to get an in-depth look at our community. The students enjoyed putting in their addresses and showing us the signs on their streets.

It is nice to know that there is a tool such as GEG where teachers across the globe can come together and share ideas and ask questions. I also like how the forum is in once place. I belong to a bunch of groups on other social media sites and sometimes it is hard to keep track of where you found an idea when there are multiple groups you belong to.
