Participants were shown 25 black-and-white photographs for 3 seconds each, and were asked to choose between two mental states represented by the photographs. Some of these emotions were 'sad' and 'afraid' while some were far more complex such as 'fantasising'.
In order to Validate whether the eyes task was a theory of mind ability, participants in the autism sample and the Tourette's sample undertook the Happe's Strange Story test. If the eyes task was a measure of mind ability then those who performed poorly on the eyes task should perform similarly poorly on the strange story task.

On the control tasks, all groups performed normally on the tasks they completed. However on the eye task the autism group did significantly worse than the two control groups, with 16.3 being the mean score for the high functioning adults with autism, while the mean score for the two other control groups were 20.3 and 20.4 respectively.
The autism group also struggled on the Happe's strange story test while the Tourette's group had no problems.

1. Even high functioning adults with autism have a problem with their theory of mind, in other words they find it difficult to read others emotions. This supports the claim that mind deficit is central to understanding autism.
2. The eyes task is a valid test of theory of mind for high functioning adults with autism.
