This is one of the highest magnitude Tsunami/Earthquakes in recorded history, only 5 exceeding over 9. The reason this devastating event occurred was along a thrust fault in the subduction zone, where the Indian tectonic plate is going below the overriding Burmese plate, This caused 1000's of years of stress between the two plates which unless-ed billions of tones of water in all directions, affecting more than 18 country's.

Geographical Information Systems (GIF) is responsible for answering the geographical questions, for example when medical teams need to get to the most affected area's the fastest way, they can get information from GIF (Geographical Information Systems) where to go and the fastest routes. Also people will be wanting to know the impact on geography, infrastructure, and population. This helps many response teams, government, survivors, to aid in determining what areas were affected over a large geographical area.
