Patina is a hard working girl who wants one thing, to win. Consequently Patina joined a new track team and trained hard to get a second place. As a result patina pushes herself in training,to manage her school work, and track. Later on patina is stopped by the news of an accident involving her sister and aunt, leaving patina stuck. Still wanting to run for them she builds up the courage to run the race and push herself as hard as she can for them.

At the beginning of the book Patina struggles to make friends and is rude to anybody who talks about her mom. Throughout the story patina learns many lessons one of which teaches her that other people have struggles to. this leads her to open up and not snap back at others because she knows that others have hidden struggles.

Patina's internal conflict starts when her mother loses her legs and she can't live with her anymore. this leads her to be defensive towards anybody who talks about her mother even causing her to snap back and be extremely mean. Although she does lose this trait over the course of the book she still isn't able to control all her feelings.

As patina arrives at track practice she is paired with the other long distance runners. After awhile of doing drills she gets into a fight with another girl. In doing so she is pushed to her limit finally snapping. She is put outside of practice and eventually tries to resolve things and does.

School is a place where she can get away and get work done. She uses the school as a place where she can talk to others and grow relationships. The school symbolizes peace and place where she can connect with others.

Turkey wings symbolize care. Patina never knows what the next day can bring but she does know that there will always be turkey wings. When she went to her new family that adopted her traditions and cared for her.
