What is Imagism?

The term “Imagism” often refers to poetry made by a small group of authors in the 1910’s, focused heavily on clear, tangible language as opposed to overly explanatory and emotional writing that was popular at the time. According to one article, imagism “aimed to strip away poetry’s tendency toward dense wordiness and sentimentality and to crystallize poetic meaning in clear, neatly juxtaposed images” (Mambrol). Imagism expanded on ancient types of poetry such as haiku and lyrical verses that also featured clear descriptions, allowing poets to expand into free verse, focusing solely on the formation of a “hard, dry image” (Brief Guide). However, it is important to note that while imagist works don’t explain themselves directly, they are not devoid of meaning. Metaphors and symbolism are commonly used in imagist poems to form a theme, something that is essential in all interesting art forms. In this collection of a poem, a photo, and a video, I have sought to convey clear images while also imparting meaning. Beneath the works, I have included more detailed descriptions of their themes and how I aimed to show them. I hope you enjoy my Imagism Padlet.
