This reading explores two key findings from a study on racism and individual responses, specifically focusing on Vietnamese-Australians. Firstly, it challenges the notion that racism can be neatly categorised into old and new forms, highlighting the historical complexity shaped by events, influential figures, assimilation challenges, minority behaviour, and misconceptions. Additionally, the study reveals the role of the political and social context in shaping responses to racism. Secondly, it emphasises the diverse responses to racism across different generations and contexts. Older and younger generations vary in their willingness to confront racism, suggesting that one-size-fits-all approaches may not be effective. Instead, people strategically adapt their responses based on social relationships and context. This study underscores the need for detailed, context-specific analyses of racism and the importance of training individuals in contextual responses, challenging the idea that racism and its responses are uniform. The reading has educated me on the ongoing and past experiences of this migrant group and made me self reflect on what I can do as an educator and global citizen.

The text tells us the story and experience of Lam's family's journey from South Vietnam to Australia as migrants. After the communist government took over South Vietnam, Lam's family decided to leave due to the unfavourable conditions for people with Chinese backgrounds. They spent six months secretly preparing a small fishing boat for their escape. They embarked on their perilous journey, facing danger from Navy ships and arrived in international waters safely. Eventually, Lam's family, along with many others, made it to Darwin, Australia, where they received assistance from friendly people and organisations. This highlights the struggles and resilience of Lam's family as they sought refuge in Australia and how they were able to overcome obstacles with the help of friendly people and organisations in their new home. This reflects historical experiences experienced by migrants. Lam recounts their early experiences in Australia, where we learnt that they struggled with language barriers and cultural differences but found work and support from the local community. These obstacles such as language barriers are historical experiences that can relate to migrants. Lam said to obtained Australian citizenship and later returned to Vietnam to contribute to its development and tourism. Despite his long stay in Australia, he considers it his home and values its multicultural nature, emphasising the importance of embracing one's cultural background while considering Australia their primary country. all of Lams families experiences are ones that majority of migrants go through.
