A clean and organised classroom

From observing classrooms it is important that the room is kept clean and organised. The reason for this is because it makes the teaching experience so much more efficient. Everything can be found quickly, such as workbooks and learning equipment, allowing the lessons to flow problem free and with enough time to spare. 'Tidy desk, tidy mind' meaning that a cluttered or disorganised environment will affect your clarity of thought. Organised surroundings and affairs will allow for clearer thought organisation.

Building a trusting and caring relationship with students is important in encouraging students to participate within the classroom. It builds their confidence in getting involved and lessens their fear of failure when expressing their thoughts and ideas.

In a study by Gillespie (2002), he recognised that 'the inherent qualities of a student-teacher relationship (caring, knowing, trust and mutual respect) and a teacher’s rapport with students resulted in a classroom environment where students were affirmed and supported to achieve their best.'

Rather than having them sit at a desk and listen to the teacher, children can be stimulated by activities that allow students to explore different senses and textures, projects involving creation or activities where students can move around and explore.
