<title>Some major changes Unfortunately I have had to make some major changes to my project in order to achieve ethical approval.I had a meeting with Dr Jen Harvey, Dr Claire McAvinia and Dr Linda Moore on the 14th February 2017 to discuss my submission. As a result I am changing both the recruitment process and the use of video in my artefact.details of the agreed changes can be found under the section entitled &#39;supervision&#39;.Since then I have mad changes to the procedure and the associated forms for my project. I have also added a letter asking parents to express interest before contacting them.I&#39;m not that disappointed about the changes to the recruitment process I am however, about the use of video .I will be replacing anonymised videos of parents with children with one video in which myself and a colleague &#39;role play&#39; a demonstration of steps in a practical care task. The trouble is, I wanted to test the efficacy of short video clips in teaching parents and feel that much of the value will be lost through the use of role play.Perhaps I&#39;m wrong.....I will still be using a short video clip of not more than 10-15 secs, I will still be able to test the effect of anonymising and will still be demonstrating an actual instruction given in an associated tweet.I have spent considerable time online exploring whether children with disability are appearing in online video and whether guidance on ethics has developed.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     I have been back to Holland Bloorview Childrens Hospital site in Toronto several times( http://hollandbloorview.ca/) to see what these trailblazers are doing. I also put a call into Dr Ann Cody at the Health Research Board in Ireland and Dr Mary McCarron from Trinity College&#39;s IDS-TILDA research programme to see whats happening locally. The impression is thereis some ambiguity on the ethical use of videos involving children with cognitive disability. A key issue is that children with moderate-severe profound disability may never have the capacity to communicate their consent nor to realise the implications of allowing their anonymised videos to appear online.Parents, families and guardians will therefore always be involved in making decisions about this sensitive area of privacy. Thus while children with no disability can withdraw their assent and indeed hold their parents accountable for having posted their childhood videos online, children with a cognitive disability may never have this right.Obviously this has advantages in that it means some people with a disability may never object to being shown in online videos, but it does not make it right. I think guidance on the specific needs for this area may need to come from research ethics committees such as the Health Research Board.I think the  value to society gained from sharing knowledge through anonymised videos of parents supporting children in completing everyday tasks outweighs the right to privacy in this case. It does not however, outweigh the right to assent and subsequently withdraw consent. Therefore only adults and children who have the capacity to consent should be engaged in videos that are published online. 30/1/17 Waiting for Approval met with Dr Linda Moore again last week. It was a very helpful session with a review of my submission on methodology. I agreed to submit a paper on my procedure. I sent this off yesterday. I am now reviewing the appendices that go with the procedure. I will send them off over the next few daysIts unfortunate that most of my time has been spent synthesising what I had written in the proposal. A yet I have to achieve ethical approval. Linda has informed me that she will review my submissions and send them to LTTC. She stated that the LTTC will provide preliminary ethical approval. I will be able to proceed with the project at that point.Ethics Submission DITThe ethics submission for this project went in on the 16/10/16 and resubmitted on the 5/11/16. I am still waiting for ethics approval. While this was ok for a while as it gave me a chance to catch up it has now become a problem. I wrote to ask Claire McAvinia about it today. She said I could consider going ahead with LTTC(department) approval.Ethics Submission WorkThis has gone through. I&#39;m delighted to say that it was a smooth process. Going ForwardsI think I&#39;m happy to go ahead with LTTC approval rather than full ethics at this stage. I can start the project and do the videotaping.I can then wait for final ethics approval before publishing 6/12/12 Its been a very productive couple of weeks I have now received the signed letter from my employer confirming ethical approval to carry out the study on my worksiteThe  process  helped me explore a range of additional consents I may have to undertake when doing this kind of work in the future. Interestingly the use of my own laptop at work became an issue for my employer which I had to get additional consent for. I also decided that I needed to make explicit the ownership of the artefact and sought approval for this.During last week I had a chance to attend a course for Health and Social Care Professionals(HSCP) on research. It was an excellent opportunity to see how the HSE and Trinity College are supporting thee involvement of pateients/service users/customers in designing and evaluating health services and interventions. By their own admission the approach is still hospital centric and favouring deductive approaches. It will be interesting to see responses to my research.I&#39;m glad to say that artefact development and sample selections have now started. I&#39;m waiting ethics approval from DIT but know I can at least start this aspect of the project.Ive had considerable experience in website set up and in using articulate storyline 2 and wordpress.com over the last few weeks                                                                                                                                                                     RESEARCH ETHICS Research ethics submission for my workplace- I am still awaiting my employers approval for the research. I am just reaching the deadline for a return from the CEO this week.I have sent a gentle reminder email. MY KNOWLEDGE OF RESEARCH ETHICS A great deal of my time and thinking over the last month has been centred around this area. I have realised the importance of ;A living knowledge approach in undertaking action research. To this end I have built the collection and critical reflection on the project, myself and my learning into my proposed methods the level level of privacy and security that may be required in undertaking research or video recording of childrenI intend to return to a review of a number of papers I read and websites I visited in preparation of my ethics approval forms. I will write the annotations in my blog. OCTOBER 2016 My ethics submissions for work and the DIT ethics committee have been taking up an enormous amount of time to finish. While its been relatively easy to put the initial proposal together the ethics submissions have been more challenging. Its not that the material to include has been difficult to put together it&#39;s that the editing process has taken so long. I a.m increasingly refining what is included in the proposal.Hopefully at this stage there will be a  only a small amount of further work required.Thankfully I now have confirmation that the research proposal has passed approval at the Learning and Teaching Centre. I met Dr Linda Moore who is my supervisor for the research. Its been very stimulating working with her.I&#39;ve attended a workshop session on sourcing references for my literature review. It was an invaluable session as it helped to confirm my strategy for searching.I also attended a lecture with Dr Orla Hanratty and Dr Claire McAvinia on methodology. This was great as it gave me a chance to explore the complexities involved in approaches and the link to my purpose. I am happy that the approach will be an action research project  that is participative naturalistic research involving collection of qualitative and quantitative data. The lecture with Claire and Orla has prompted me to consider and read a range of articles in the area of methodologies. I intend to include these in my annotated bibliography.18/10/16It been a busy couple of weeks. I&#39;ve made entries into some other parts of this portfoilo and worked on my ethics submission which I sent off yesterday. I also wrote to my employer asking them to consider the  research and ethics approval. The ethics process has been very helpful in helping me to refine the details of my subjects participants and procedure. This has meant a considerable amount of change to my research proposal. It also gave me a chance to explore the artefact and to establish what I may need to do to make tweets with video links secure. It looks like I may go down the route of protected tweets. Imay also get parents to upload the videos into their own you tube channels. That way they retain full control over the use of the videos they have provided.I&#39;m now working at these changes and on editing the proposal based on comments from Linda Moore, my supervisor. The process of writing the ethics forms and research proposal has taken me away from work on my annotated bibliography. This means that while I have spent some time locating references for inclusion in my final paper, I have not had a chance to do the amount of reading I would like.I think that going forward I will now refocus on the annotated bibliography and on deciding the journal I am working to be published in.Now that the ethics submission is off my desk this may  prove easier. This afternoon I&#39;m going to a session on instructional design. This may help me move back to the reading which I really enjoy.</title>
