What symbol(s) can best be associated with Scylla(besides the dangerous rock)?

A symbol that best describes Scylla would be a spear. First of all, based on Scylla’s physical description, her six heads could remind the reader of spearheads. Also, her method of attacking Odyseuss’ crew, can be easily compared to the way a soldier of that time would wield a spear. Additionally, a spear would require different tactics to avoid or to fight against, similar to how Odyseuss had to adjust his strategies during his fight with Scylla. To further elaborate, Odyseuss had to think and move differently, as he would as a soldier on the field of battle during the Trojan War, depending on what types of weapons his enemies were using. In conclusion, Scylla is best represented by a spear because of her physical behavior and her special interaction with Odyseuss.

What characteristics best describe Scylla and how does it link to Greek culture?

Anger describes Scylla because she loathed her appearance after Circe changed her into the monster she is now. She destroyed everything in her path eating humans as they pass by the rock where she was. Her anger, however, is misdirected, because although it was Circe that turned her into a terrifying monster, she chooses to kill humans instead of exacting revenge on Circe. This shows the involvement of magic and gods in Greek culture, which was very common in those times. Gods, monsters, and magic immediately bring to mind ancient Greece for most people, which is why Scylla’s anger is the best example in this case.

What does Scylla symbolize?

One could argue that Scylla represents an almost impossible decision, as Odyseuss was forced to choose between going to face Scylla or Charybdis. Odyseuss was forced to either indirectly kill his entire crew, or helplessly watch six of his men die as sacrifices. Another argument that could be made would be to say that Scylla symbolizes the dangers of the sea. She is an evident threat to Odyseuss and his crew, and was sent by Poseidon, the god of the sea. Also, in the story, it is stated that Scylla is located between Sicily and Calabria, which was known as a dangerous passage at the time, further relating her with the dangerous sea.

Allusion - Smite (Video Game)

In the video game, "Smite," gods, monsters, and other mythical creatures battle it out in a virtual arena. Players have the option to fight as Scylla, the Horror of the Deep, already linking her to the monster the Odyseuss encounters on his journey home. Within the game, Scylla uses her heads to give enemies a good beating before sending them to a watery grave. Of course, this rendering of the monster differs greatly from the original beast. She is now a child with her four heads acting as legs instead of a six-headed serpent-like creature.
