Hundreds of people are forced to live on the ground in unsafe and unsanitary conditions. There are two main problems that have contributed to these conditions, backup in Immigration Court and getting turned away.
When families seeking asylum come to the border, they must go through Immigration Court. The asylum granting process should only take nine months, but to this date, it can take four years to go through Immigration Court and be granted asylum. One of the main problems of this backup is the lack of judges for the court. Since the older cases are still pending, when new cases are brought forward, backups occur.
Another reason for the crowded camps is because many immigrants have gotten turned down because people do not think the danger they are in is worth asylum. A lot of the people in the camps waiting to be granted asylum do have issues that need to be addressed. When they are turned away, they can not go back to South America because of the danger so they are living in camps that are over crowded, unsanitary and have people living on the ground in various weather conditions.
The debate over ayslum seekers has also lead to a government shutdown that has now become the longest shutdown in history of the U.S.

Because of the backup and rejections, the way Asylum Seekers Live changes drastically. Since there is an overflow everyone who doesn't have a housing unit is living on the ground and in housing units there is normally 5 to 8 people in a unit. The people that are living on the ground have no money and have to beg for food because they cannot afford it this also leads to children and adults becoming underfed which can create serious medical conditions. Also when living in such tight quarters sickness spreads like wildfires. Living on the ground is also very unsanitary medicals issues occur often when someone is in constant contact with germs and bacteria.

Some Asylum Seekers are so desperate for safety, they are trying to illegally cross the border. The president's Zero Tolerance policy has children being separated from their parents and even siblings separated from one another. The Even though the policy ended just days ago, there are still thousands of children that can't fine their parents. When families try and cross the border in an attempt for safety families get separated and kids are dumped into foster systems while their parents go to jail. A parent knows their child better than anyone does and being separated could face major mental consequences on a child. In May, more than 650 children were separated from their parents in a span of two weeks. As of January 25th 2019 there have been 2,500 children separated from their families. If parents are able to become reunited with their children it's still very complicated because now that children have been in many different homes they cannot locate them sometimes. Recently there have been more than 700 undocumented children but I've been taken away from their parents and more than 100 of those children were below the age of four. The conditions of which asylum-seekers are living takes tools on families and not to mention families getting separated which can change the children or parents lives forever.

In late November of 2018, tear gas a chemical that can cause tearing, coughing, headaches and vomiting, was used to calm down a group of asylum seekers. It was reported that several people fainted including a baby.

Why the world needs to be aware of this issue

Even though the focus of this immigration paper is at the southern border, the rest of the world should be concerned about this issue. whether you agree with the policies or not, people are in danger. Most people move to South America are fleeing because of gang violence and or opportunity. If they were to stay in South America that could be sexually assaulted, extremely injured, or even killed. Also, people are getting rejected for real problems and that they could be sexually assaulted extremely injured or even killed. Not to mention, the camps are on the South American side of the border which means that gangs can still attack people there. Asylum Seekers aren't safe until they're inside our border and with the backups and Immigration Court and getting turned down they cannot come into America. It's also important for people to be concerned about the Asylum Seekers health. If they are not getting what thing we need in the camps and if the kids are danger then people should be aware of it so that they can make the camps better. The camps should be clean and safe for people to live while waiting for asylum. The world would want to know if people were not being treated to the best ability while waiting for help. If the United States and the rest of the world don't take action now more people could be injured or killed.

The things that are being done to assist this issue, are taking a political stance. The Republicans and Democrats are trying to compromise on a plan that will fulfill the needs of both parties. The Presidents, Donald Trump, wants to create a wall to assure no one can get into this country. The wall could cost up to 5.7 billion dollars. The Democrats feel that spending the money on this wall is a waste and feel the money should be spent else where.
The President has just reached an agreement to re-open the government. Trump is giving the Democrats and Republicans three weeks to talk and sort out the wall issue and come to an agreement. A reason Trump re-opened the government, was because agencies that were affected were creating problems. For example, the airports were becoming backed up because people who were working without pay, called in sick so they didn't have to work. Four major flights were delayed which create complications for everyone on them and who are work with the airlines.
The immigration issues are still trying to be controlled with the two parties. As of this date, we will not know the final solution for the wall and immigrants. The solution will continue to be undecided until the two parties come to a compromise.

Today is my third week being separated from my parents. My baby sister Lidia is not sleeping in our foster home because she misses mommy. The foster parents said that we will be going to another home in a few weeks, but I'm scared because that just means we're farther away from finding our parents. I am so nervous that the people in green uniforms will separate me and Lidia. They have already taken Jose when we were getting sorted into our foster homes. I haven't seen him in two and a half weeks and I'm scared for him. He has never gotten along with other children and I don't know how he is doing with the other children.
I have been asking Ms. Brown and Mr. Brown (my foster parents) where my real parents are and all they say is that they are in a different place because they did something bad. If they are talking about trying to cross the boarder then I'm confused. Back home in Honduras, there was a gang targeting us. My father told the police where they were hiding and now they are coming for us. One times my dolly that I left outside was on our door step with a note saying they were going to hurt us. My main goal is to keep Lidia happy and try and find the rest of my family.

-Andrea
