Behavioral Theory: Influenced by B. F. Skinner, an influential behaviorist. Skinner made the connection through his studies using mice drawing the conclusion that consequences had more importance in how human behavior is formed than anything that occurred before or during. He believed that our consequences/results of actions, are what establish a person's behavioral patterns. The observation of mice conducted in his study then led to him identifying that positive rewards help to create repeated actions. So when a reward is granted for doing something positive, our brains remember that and want to do it again in order to secure that reward once more. The driving force behind wanting to receive such reward, leads a person to doing said actions again. This rewards method has proven true throughout history with athletics, the arts, entertainment and science, to name a few. A positive mindset really can set the tone for one's achievements.

Social Theory: Which directly challenged Behavioral Theory, was established by Albert Bandura, a Psychologist who argued that humans learn through observation in whatever environment we are in and other humans in our shared space or surroundings. Bandura broke this theory down into four stages. Attention, Retention, Reproduction and Motivation. All of which he believed decide whether a person establishes a new behavior. This finding gets a bit more complex, as Bandura cites that not all observed behavior will result in the person taking on said behavior.

I believe the best summary would be, show me who your friends are and I'll show you your future. Who we surround ourselves with and how they interact with us and in front of us, can greatly influence how we see things which inevitably affects our actions. His studies also led to the correlation between positive and negative feedback and how it can impact an individual.

Cognitive Theory: This theory was founded by Jean Piaget, a Swiss psychologist Piaget is famed as being the first to include cognitive theories in the field of psychology. His researched concluded that our mental framework, how we perceive the world and everything within our world influences us most when learning. He referred to this as a schema. Interactions and experiences along with our deep rooted belief system play a major role in shaping such mindset. While Piaget believed this framework can directly impact our behavior, thoughts and even our emotions, he also believed that framework could be altered based on how an individual takes on new information. So how a person sees the world directly affects the outcome of their actions. Basically a chain reaction beginning with our thoughts, which then affect our feelings and in turn influence our behavior. These findings mean that how we think matters and doing so with a positive mindset will greatly increase chances of their being a positive outcome as a result.

Humanistic Theory: The most complex theory of the four, Abraham Maslow believed that the entirety of a person plays a major factor in our actions and behavior. This theory led to individuality being a valid piece of the puzzle. Each individual however has the same basic structure of needs, which became known as Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Those needs which are visually conveyed as a pyramid which different sections, detail how we operate which our most basic of needs being the base and we level up as our other needs are met which lead to a greatly likelihood of achievement and accomplishment. The four sections can be summarized as either deficiency needs or growth needs. Maslow concluded that each person is not only capable of achievement, but wants to achieve, if their needs are first fulfilled. Out of each of the four theories, this was the one I was aware of, which I believe speaks highly of how this complex breakdown of our society as a whole is fitting and has withstood the test of time.

Personally, I identified most with Cognitive Theory. I believe this approach would best help me with staying motivated. I am an emotional personal and being aware of my thoughts and emotions early on with each situation does greatly impact how I respond, react and conclude whatever situation I am in. By paying attention to the beginning, I can help direct the process leading to a more positive outcome. I believe I now understand how my brain works, the thoughts that come from that framework and how I allow my thoughts to affect my behavior. I'm curious to see how I can use this theory to assist me in my daily life.

Motivation Technique 1: "Have a Positive Attitude": When I go into situations with doubt or a negative perception, the outcome usually ends up leading to more distressing or negative feelings and consequences. When I approach a situation with a positive viewpoint and hopeful thoughts, situations tend to turn out better even if they don't go as planned. This is powerful and having positivity truly matters. Regardless of how I feel about assignments or the overall lesson for the week, if I approach it with a positive mindset I'll be more likely to learn the information, but also excel at my homework and tests.

Motivation Technique 2: "Learn from Your Mistakes": This technique is a true challenge for me, because I struggle at recognizing my own patterns and cycles. When someone brings them to my attention I'm then able to dissect the process and understand how I got to that point or outcome. When it comes to school, learning from my mistakes can definitely make me a stronger student, but also lead to positive reinforcement so I do better and better with each course.
