NSDAP searches for air raid shelters. Hans paints his blinds  black so he can use them for blackout curtains. Rudy attends track and field day for Hitler Youth, which takes place on August 24. The "Coat Men" (Nazi soldiers) ask to take Rudy. The first air raid on Germany takes place. Max could not leave for shelter from the raid with them, so he stays in the house. He looked outside during the raid. It was the first time he had seen outside the house in almost two years. September 19, first real raid. While everyone panicked Liesel calmed them all down by reading. Ms. Holtzapfel asks Liesel to read to her. In return she would stop spitting on the door and give them her coffee ration. Han's helps a Jew in public, and is beat for his actions. After another air raid Rudy and Liesel find a fighter pilot just in time to see him die. Ilsa Hermann gives Liesel a for her to start writing her own story. She named it "The Book Thief". One night while Liesel is editing her story, her neighborhood is bombed. Hans, Rosa, Rudy, and all of Liesels neighbors are killed during the attack. As Rudy is pulled out of the rubble, Liesel gives him the kiss he had always begged her for. The only thing Death saved for Liesel was her journal.
