Oscar Wilde

Pictured above is Oscar Wilde, born in 1854, a British author who wrote the famously gothic novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray. The novel's titular character has a portrait of himself rendered by his dear friend and admirer, Basil Hallward. Dorian desires that the portrait would age and show his morals instead of his being, and as years go on, Dorian remains youthful and beautiful, while his portrait grows old and ugly with his sins. The novel became infamous and was under immense fire due to its allusions to homosexuality. Eventually, Wilde was charged and found guilty of "gross indecency". Years later, Wilde remains important to homosexual history, not only for his contribution to the canon of queer literature, for The Picture of Dorian Gray, but also for his withstanding of the British state's attempt to break him through punishment for his homosexual behaviors.

The article details the pivotal Supreme Court case Lawrence v. Texas (2003). Upon responding to a reported weapons disturbance, the Houston police force found John Lawrence engaged in homosexual activity with another man named Tyron Garner. At this time, homosexual sexual activity, legally regarded as sodomy, was classified as deviant sexual intercourse. After appealing all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States, they overturned the decision. Deciding that sodomy laws were unconstitutional, through the understanding that consensual same-sex sexual intercourse was protected by due process under the Fourteenth Amendment. This case remains increasingly important in establishing equal protection for homosexuals engaging in sexual behavior. The case also laid the foundation for further protections, such as the legal status of same-sex marriage in the monumental decision Obergefell v. Hodges.

This article, written by Meg Metcalf, describes the historical context of the first Pride marches. Occurring on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, LGBTQ+ people in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago gathered and took to the streets. During their marches, the queer community came together to celebrate the Stonewall Riots but also call for equal rights. Although these first Pride marches may not have yielded immediate tangible results, they started conversations and shifted the tides for future queer rights movements. If not for these events, homosexuals would not be in their current standing in society.

Above is an Instagram post by Alice Oseman, the author of the comic Heartstopper, which was recently adapted into a Netflix show. Both the comic and the show follow Charlie, a recently outed gay teenager, and his love story with Nick, an assumingly straight rugby player. It also chronicles the experiences of other queer teenagers, such as a lesbian couple and a transgender girl navigating adolescence. This Netflix show is an extremely important depiction of homosexuality in regard to the showcase of a positive experience. Many other entries of queer media that depict homosexuality often showcase a more negative depiction of what the queer experience is, but Heartstopper challenges this and showcases a positive depiction of homosexuality that can be a reality for many.

Above is a meme that I found in my camera roll that I believe to be a homosexual meme. It sets up a contradiction between conservative aesthetics with progressive, positive homosexual messages. Obviously, none of these statements is factual. This meme highlights strife in the homosexual lifestyle. Same sex marriage has recently been brought into question in terms of legality. Additionally, there are literally states that have enacted laws that illegimitize the legal identification of transgender individuals. Overall, this meme puts a spotlight on the societal hardships that homosexuals are currently enduring.

Alan Turing

The TikTok above highlights the life of Alan Turing. He was an extremely smart individual who published a paper that laid the groundwork for modern computing. Additionally, Turing was a pivotal player in breaking the German enigma code, which led to the loss of the Axis powers in World War 2. Unfortunately, after all the good he did in the world, he was found out as a homosexual and charged for it. His punishment included either imprisonment or chemical castration. He underwent chemical castration, which worsened his quality of life so much, he unfortunately ended his life. Alan Turing's life is an extremely important showcase of the extreme hardships even the most model homosexuals went through. Regardless of his role in creating the groundwork for the computer or helping to end the Second World War, he was still a homosexual, which was not legal, and he faced massive punishment by the state he so heavily helped.

The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall

Above is a novel entitled The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall. This novel is regarded as the first lesbian novel written in English that is widely known. The story follows Stephen Gordon, who is an upper-class Englishwoman who happens to be a homosexual. The narrative chronicles her life, specifically in regard to how she grappled with the malignant social forces that she underwent for her sexuality. The Well of Loneliness is an incredibly important homosexual novel in the queer canon. Not only was it the first depiction of an openly lesbian life, but it was also the cause for a lot of conversation in the West, which worked to push the foot forward in terms of queer rights movements. Although legal recognition would not come until much later, the novel created a sense of resistance against social norms that sought to disarm people of their queerness.

This is a clip from Bottoms (2023). The movie follows two best friends, PJ and Josie, who find themselves at the bottom of the social ladder in high school. Getting themselves in a predicament, they create a school fight club, which will provide them a chance to finally get the girlfriends of their dreams. Bottoms is the homosexual version of movies such as Heathers and Bring It On. This movie provided female homosexuals a chance for positive and funny representation, which has hardly ever been done before, except for possibly But I'm a Cheerleader. The movie has also opened the doors for more homosexual movies to be made and cherished.

Something To Give Each Other - Troye Sivan.

Something To Give Each Other, released in 2023 by Troye Sivan, is a notably homosexual album. The lead single, entitled Rush, which is an ode to the feeling of partying as a homosexual. Sivan notes that "rush" is a feeling of confidence, freedom, and liberation. His third single One of Your Girls, tackles situations that homosexuals often encounter, that of becoming attracted to heterosexuals. Sivan laments about all the times in which he bends over backward for this man who will never see him as more than a friend, no matter how desperately Sivan wants otherwise. Overall, the album highlights the ups, downs, lefts, and rights of a life navigating homosexuality. Through his exploration, Sivan offers a truthful and raw depiction of his complicated sexuality. Thus, affirming the idea that homosexuality is not a monolith, and is in fact very complicated.
