The painting "I saw the Figure 5 in Gold" by Charles Demuth is inspired from the poem "The Great Figure" written by his friend, the physician cum poet William Carlos Williams as he used the imagineering technique to create the painting. In both paintings, the subject matter seems to be the Number 5 as it has been focused on with detail.Prominence has been given to the number five and both the artist and the poet have captured a similar scenario. The only difference would be that in the painting,The artist(Demuth) has used symbolism to define subjects. For an instance, the red color has been used to symbolise the red firetruck in the poem.Whereas, the poet(Carlos Williams) has directly referred to the firetruck being red in color in terms of words.

This painting is inspired by the poem because Charles Demuth created this portrait of his friend, using imagery from Williams’s poem "The Great Figure," which evokes the sights and sounds of fire engine. In both poem and potrait, they having the same subject matter (Number 5).Moreover they both explain about lights, street lamp, and blaring sirens of the red fire engine.Another similarity of this painting is about the colours. Red box represents the fire truck. The only difference that i can see is the artist used symbolism to convey his thoughts through his painting but the poet does not uses any symbolism to express his thoughts.

The painting titled "I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold" was originally from the poem from William Carlos Williams, who is a friend to Demuth. As you can see the main similarities is the Number 5.William recalls the night he was walking down the street where he saw a fire truck that was passing by.All he saw was the number 5 on the truck, painted in gold colour.Hence, the painting with the Figure 5.The background also shows the time he was walking down the street which is night time. The red represents the colour of the fire truck. In this painting, the difference in it is Demuth shows this in the form of painting where else William's is in the form of poem.

This painting was inspired by the great figure. The painting and the poems has some similarities and difference. For the similarities it both haves lights that shines the city. Secondly the poems says that the persona saw a gold coated 5 as we can see in the painting. For the third similarities the middle section of the painting has the same colour of the firetruck. For the difference in the poem it protrays that it has a rainy weather but in the painting its a clear night. The second difference is that the poem mentions the presence of a firetruck but in the painting there is no firetruck. And the final difference is that in the poem it is written that there are sounds of alarm but we cant hear it in the painting

The painting "I Saw The Figure 5 In Gold" was probably inspired by a line in the poem titled Great Figure by William Carlos Williams. A line in the poem recites the tittle of the painting and announces the presence of a number 5 in the scene. This probably was the reason for the number 5 to be painted in a sense that it dominates the painting. Another similarity that the painting shares with the poem is probably the red block colours in the painting. The blocks probably represent the colours often seen on fire trucks which was the subject of the poem. The painting also resembled a mirror of sorts that reflected the rain and the surrounding of the fire truck as it travels through the city to answer the call of the gong. The difference between the painting and the poem is that the painting has a dreamy quality to it that implores the viewer to think and decipher the painting. It is a tiny bit abstract while the poem is straight forward and tells of the incidents occuring.

What the poem, The Great Figure and the painting, I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold have in common is the figure 5. In the poem, William said that he saw the figure 5 painted in gold on a red truck. I think Charles made it very clear by that. In the painting, the figure 5 was drawn so big and it was painted in gold. Second point is the dark city and the light are potrayed very well in both poem and painting. The first difference is the Charles did not exactly draw the firetruck image as William described in the poem and as well as the rain, gong, siren and wheels.

The poem became the inspiration for the painting. Therefore, the painting is an interpretation of the poem. To understand the painting, one needs to hear the poem. To visualize the poem, the painting allows the viewer to experience what the poet experienced on that rainy night. The similarities between the 2 artwork is the number 5 is given emphasis. In addition, a firetruck is mentioned and visualized in both of the artwork. The dark city and lights are also portrayed in both the painting and the poem. The only difference between the 2 artwork is that the painter, Charles Demuth portrayed the firetruck (with symbolism) as a red block of colour where as the poet, William Carlos William mentioned the firetruck directly .

''The Great Figure'' is a short poem wrote by Mr. William Carlos Williams, and ''I Saw The Figure 5 In Gold'' painted by Mr. Charles Demuth. Genuinely, Demuth just got inspired with William's poem, then he made an artwork for that. So, the poem is about an unexpected encounter with a number that he(the poet) experienced, there was a fire truck as it raced by him in the city. The painter depicted the painting based on Williams's poem, and what most viewer can basically sees straight through is the Number 5, it represented as the 5 figures he encountered to. The red colours represented as the fire truck, also, the gold colours represented the wealthy 5 figures. The total view of the painting(the street) depicted that he experienced the situation on a very empty street. The similarities between the poem and the painting is the number 5, same colour which is red that represent fire truck. The differences are just that both poem and painting respectively.

I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold was inspired by the poem, “The Great Figure,” written by Demuth’s friend, William Carlos Williams. William's poem 'The Great Figure" is deliberately straightforward but Demuth's painting " I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold " is more complicated. Demuth divided the picture plane into rectangles and triangles, which refract light and change the color of space and shapes. The diagonal lines force your eyes to race around as you try to understand the image. The intersecting lines, repeated "5," round forms of the numbers, lights, street lamp, and blaring sirens of the red fire engine together infuse the painting with a vibrant, urban energy.
