This week we were informed at the task for this term and sorted into small working groups to perform a 20 minute set, which is focused on solo performance and in a live lounge style at the Bleaches Houses.

We put together a set list of 5 songs to suite our style of playing. We agreed that we all work best in the rock genre so selected 5 rock songs from different eras and artists to bring some variation into our performance. We chose Breed (Nirvana), Paranoid (Black Sabbath), Voodoo Child (Jimi Hendrix), Dakota (Stereophonics), Bullet In The Head (Rage Against The Machine).

Once we had decided on the songs, we also chose the order of the songs (shown above) to bring different levels of energy to different parts of the set. For example, Breed in a fast tempo to start with, meaning that it brings the high energy right from the beginning. And Voodoo child has a slower tempo to help the audience recover in the middle of the set, ready for a big finish.
Because we all already knew breed, we had a go at playing it all together as a band.

Today was productive as we put together our setlist of songs to learn which suited all of our playing styles. However our work could be improved by trying to learn all the songs well in a short space of time and be more productive when playing songs and learning the individual parts.

This week, after previously sorting out the songs for our setlist, we decided to play Breed and Paranoid and get them to start flowing and sounding as musically tight as the the originals.

We had only practiced Breed once or twice the week before so we wanted to make sure this was as good as it could before we moved on. I thought that after playing Breed we could have improved on our timing as a band as well as sped up and slowed down in some parts.
However I thought that between last week's session and this session, everyone has learnt their parts very well. For example, Will bought his pedal board to help replicate a heavier guitar sound and I had work on my foot technique to get smoother double strokes on the kick in the verse.
Once we had practiced Breed several times and were happy with it, we started to play Paranoid.
Once again this is an iconic song so we were all familiar with it it. However there were certain parts of the song that we were unable to pull of or weren't sure what happened musically in those parts. For example, Will struggled to hit one of the high notes in the verse and me and Adam were unsure of the structure after the guitar solo. This means that we had to go away and work on the song and try and learn the parts better for next
time.
A strength from this practice is that we managed to get Breed sounding very close to original and all played our parts well. However a weakness of the practice was that we stopped and started a lot and were not too productive with time. We could improve on this next time by not getting easily distracted on other people and by also learning our parts more precisely.

This week, we decided to try and add things into our two songs that we had already rehearsed to make them more interesting and capture the audience through different transitions and additional parts.

However, before we added these additional parts, we ran through the two songs that we already had. Breed sounded very tight and the levels were very good as the vocals could be heard clearer and louder in the mix and the guitar was slightly quieter.

After this we practiced Parnoid, which we had all gone away to learn after last week. This ran lot smoother than last week and it was clear that people had learnt the song because we ll new the structure and our own parts. Therefore we got through the whole first run through without making any mistakes which sounded very tight. Once we had run this several times and it was sounding musically on point, we decided to add things to the song to keep the audience's attention but a lot put a spin on things so that people weren't just listening to a version that was exactly like the original. which is a common thing done in live performances. Therefore we decided to join the end of breed and beginning of Paranoid together through some crashes when the guitar riff kicks in. We rn this several times and discussed it so that we all knew when to come in and what we wanted to do. Therefore it only took a short amount of time to connect the two songs with the new transition and for it to work well.

Therefore I thought that this session was productive as we got both Breed and Paranoid sounding musically tight and like the original but we also added different things like transitions to keep the listener's attention and bring a live presence to the set. However I thought that we could have been more productive by trying to learn more songs to bring this week so that we could start putting the setlist together and get it to flow

This week we decided to introduce two new songs into the setlist and try and perfect them within this session so that we could use our other weeks left to add a final song and rehearse the whole set multiple times from start to finish.

The next song tow songs on the setlist were Voodoo Child and Dakota. We had an advantage when bringing these songs to the practice room, as we had already played them in some of our studio sessions together and tried to record them. Therefore we had all learnt the parts weeks before introducing them to the setlist.

However there were a few parts like the beginning of Voodoo Child and the ending of Dakota, that we weren't sure about. THerefore we sat around in a circle and played both songs on our phones to see what we weren't sure about. After a few times of playing the songs on our phones, we decided to go back to our instruments and try again which after several attempts we managed to learn and play, like heard in the original. Once we had played both of these songs and got them flowing well, we decided to run what we had learnt so far to get used to transitioning between songs (eg. changing guitar effects) and practicing interaction between songs to bring a real performance element to it. After running the set twice, we decided to change somethings in the songs to also bring elements of solo performance to it, as this is the main criteria that we are being marked on. Therefore, after the guitar solo in Paranoid, we decided to add 4 small drum solos between stabs on the guitar, bass and cymbals to bring my side of the solo performance to the set and also to bring variation to the original which is often done live.

Personally, I think that today's rehearsal was productive as we managed to add more rehearsed and complete songs to set as well as adapting them to suit the marking criteria. However I thought that is practice could have been productive by once again, learning the new songs in more depth away from college so that we would have more time to run the set and get everything flowing.

This week we decided to add and rehearse our final song of the setlist as well as smoothly run the setlist from top to bottom ready for our dress rehearsal in week 6.

As this was the final rehearsal before our dress rehearsal in front of the rest of the group, the aim for today was the get the setlist completed and to a high standard as the dress rehearsal is recorded.

Therefore we quickly set up and rn the setlist from top to bottom. After this, we began to discuss more transitions between songs as well as coming up with an intro before the first song, to build up to it. This therefore started with me coming on stage, playing an upbeat tom beat with a driving bass drum. Then the bass came in, playing a riff in the same key as breed, because the song the intro would transition into it. After this both guitars came in, making scratching noises and creating feedback for rock sounding intro. Throughout this the dynamics were slowly building which helped bring the energy up gradually. We all built to a sudden stop before Will came in the the intro to breed on guitar. This was effective as an intro for our set as we brought high energy right from the beginning and built from there, bringing the audience in and making them enjoy it. After we had figured this out we worked on transitions and speking parts between songs to engage with the audience as well as help the songs flow into eachother. For example, after voodoo child, the finall chord rings out, then i quickly count me and tom in for the hihat and guitar of Dakota. This not only helped the song flow but also means that the high energy in the performance isn't lost through a long break between songs and therefore keeps the audience's attention.
Therefore I thought this session was productive as we added the finishing touches to the set to make everything run smoothly and transtion well. However I thought that we could have been more productive by running the entire set more times to make sure that it all worked well everytime that we played it.

This week was very important as it was the week of our dress rehearsal, meaning we had to run the set a few times and make sure that there were no errors or confusion between band mates.

As there was lot of pressure and we were collectively quite nervous, we decided to set up straight away and run the set. When running the set for the first time, we realised that we were unsure of how to end Voodoo Child. However, we came to the conclusion that we would slow down to a big crash out. After this we ran the set again 3 more times before our live lounge and everything seemed to run smoothly and sounded tight.

After this we performed the set to the group. I thought that the set was very good and all ran smoothly and to plan just like in rehearsal. However the rehearsal could have been improved by all of us preparing more at home as we ran the set alot of times before the performance, meaning that we were tired when it came round to it.
Overall I thought that this session was productive as we got the setlist performed to a good standard and resolved some small issues with the set before hand. However, I thought that we could have been more productive by resolving the smaller issues before hand, allowing us more time to sit and talk to each other about the set and how it would run as opposed to just playing it.

There was a lot pressure on us as we were the first group and were all nervous to play as a band in front of cameras and a different audience.
The performance went to plan and everyone was happy with it. I thought that the performance was good as the setlist was very well rehearsed, allowing us to enjoy ourselves and feel less pressure. However this could have been more productive by all of us us setting up quicker, allowing more time to get levels right, as I was not happy with my monitor mix and could hear vocals.
