Padlet Response: “For the first time in my life I understand that poem…and I never wanted to … you have to believe me.” In a short but eloquent response, please explain why Charlie feels this way and what you feel is the quintessential meaning of the poem. by Stephen Drozdowski

Charlie feels that way about the poem because he realizes that he is going through the evolution of life, just as the kid in the poem did. He has been exposed to drugs and other things that he didn't know about before, turning his life into the next stage. These stages in Charlie's life are representative of the stages of life shown in the poem.

In short, Charlie feels this way because atleast in this moment, he feels incredibly depressed. The words "I never wanted to" have a bit of a double meaning in the sense that he never wanted to feel this way about himself and life in general. But it could also mean that he's trying to explain to this friend that he never wanted to commit suicide as a way of not letting them worry too much about him.

Charlie feels this way because he is being exposed to things too fast. He is getting emotions that he doesn't know to how to control which is making him feel suicidal. The overall meaning of the poem could be losing innocence too fast ultimately leading to death. Charlie is dealing with drugs, alcohol, death, and jealously. It is too much for him to handle.

Charlie feels this way because he knows that understanding the poem means that he has grown up and matured. He doesn't want to understand the poem though because it means that his childhood is over and he has to be responsible for something now. He has been through a lot which has changed him in a fundamental way.

Charlie expresses that he wishes that his late friend Michael at least left a note for him before committing suicide. In the poem, we are shown the thoughts of someone who is suicidal and is very depressed. In a sense, Charlie understands in a deeper sense what people with mental illnesses go through. Charlie is also able to relate to the poem because he has always felt different and had once been hospitalized. Overall, the poem expresses the ups and downs of life, especially through the eyes of a high schooler.

These emotions and situations are represented in the poem with mental illness and being alone.

Charlie felt this way about the poem because he realized he could relate to the kid in the story, they both have been exposed to many things at an early age. Leading to both having some sort of mental illness. This fast exposure also led them both to feel different compared to others in their society.
