The man’s pulse had stopped, his entire body cold. His eyelids were frozen shut, and there were large gashes on his legs and chest. His limbs were twisted out of place, and mangled even more than a Mech could possibly handle. The ‘Vern told us not to enter the forest, but he wanted to go anyways, because he “wanted to know what the ‘Vern was hiding from us”. He knew now, but he was no longer alive to tell the tale.

I turned around, and just as I was about to run to get help, I felt a hand on my shoulder. “Thou who brushes the wrists of death will forever be bound, and pursuing their death, they will never be found,” a soft, but piercing voice whispered into my ear. I quickly turned around, but there was no one there. I felt a warmth on my cheek and reached a hand to feel what it was. I was crying, but I didn’t know what for. Perhaps out of fear? No, that was impossible.

I ran for the forest clearing, unsure of what to do about what had just happened or what I had just experienced. In the clearing stood a girl, seemingly awaiting me as I approached her with my hands at my sides and my hair brushed to the side, out of my eyes so that I could properly see. “Do you know where we are?” I asked the girl, but she did not respond. Instead her eyes widened. “Do you know where you are?” She seemed to ask in disbelief, as though she was terrified of me. I shook my head, a look of blooming confusion on my face. “You’re a Halfway.”
