As I grew older, engaged students were expected to be quiet and to express their ideas in writing and projects. Sometimes students will put their head down during a class story or put their hood up while working, and that could mean that they are "in the zone" Responsiveness comes in lots of forms depending on the student's personality. </p>]]></description>

While a student doesn't always need to talk to be engaged, their posture and body language must demonstrate attentiveness. Yet, if a student is called upon they should be able to answer in an appropriate manner to demonstrate their full engagement.</p>]]></description>

This looks like: raising their hand to answer questions, volunteer to help around the classroom, volunteer to answer a question on the board, volunteer to read aloud, etc. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The way our past engagement looked can contribute to how we perceive and display it in the future. In my high school, being engaged meant listening quietly and having questions at the end of discussions. Someone else background of engagement might have been asking questions while the teacher was discussing and this will show that they are engaging, by asking follow-up questions while it is being discussed.</p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>I feel like my answers to the last two questions were not the standard of engagement that <em>I</em> want in my class. I remember having a lot of traditional "teacher in front of the class" lessons in instructional time. This meant that students needed to be quiet, listen, eye contact, sitting still, etc. These standards aren't actually signs of engagement, and it's important to make sure our classrooms are spaces of understanding!</p>]]></description>
