Personal fears and inner conflict likely caused Young Goodman Brown to have a nightmare regarding the existence of an evil society and those he once trusted as members. As Goodman Brown is yelling to Faith to avoid falling to evil during the supposed meeting in the forest, he had not "spoken when he found himself amid calm night and solitude, listening to a roar of the wind which died heavily away through the forest. He staggered against the rock, and felt it chill and damp; while a hanging twig, that had been all on fire, besprinkled his cheek with the coldest dew" (Hawthorne 70). The night appeared very calm after the intense event, hinting that the entire malicious gathering was a manifestation of Goodman Brown's fears. Additionally, the next day, Goodman Brown was described as "a stern, a sad, a darkly meditative, a distrustful, if not a desperate man he did become from the night of that fearful dream" (Hawthorne 73). This quote directly suggests Goodman Brown had a dream, which made him skeptical of everyone, even those he once felt close to.
