"Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." (Lee 103)

This is a simple explanation Mrs. Maudie gives Scout about her idea of what a mockingbird is. She is describing their innocence, or more specifically how they don't mess with people but do what they're supposed to do, keep out of trouble, and don't bother anyone or anything.
- By Maya

"'I'd rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mocking bird'" (Lee 103).

"He likened Tom's death to the senseless slaughter of songbirds by hunters and children, and Maycomb thought he was trying to write an editorial poetical enough to be reprinted in The Montgomery Advertiser." (Lee 276)

Mockingbird Theme in the Present Day

The whole idea of mockingbirds is that they are innocent birds. The killing of a mockingbird is representing the destruction of innocence. Lee expresses that idea in TKAM with Tom Robinson and his trial. He tries to be helpful and kind towards Mayella, but is convinced and killed. There are many mockingbirds of present day as well. Innocence is being destroyed in this world by racial issues, wrong convictions, and other issues. The most common example of a mockingbird is JFK and his assassination. He was a man trying to help and lead America, but innocence vanished when he got shot and killed.

Mockingbirds represent innocence, therefore killing/locking up mockingbirds (or the mockingbird symbols) is considered evil.

This song by Grant Hill Buffalo is about an encounter with God after a tragic accident, kind of like the death of Tom Robinson when he was killed in the story. This song also means being trapped and losing your freedom, like what Boo Radley had experienced in his life.
