I am writing in response to your article on the subject of childhood obesity last week. I agree with the writer of the article that childhood obesity poses a serious risk to young people today. There is no doubt that we will face many serious health and social problems in the future if we do not manage to combat this worldwide issue.

Today's generation of children lead a much less active life than their parents did when they were young. They spend much more time in front of the TV or the computer than they do playing outside with friends. In many bigger towns and cities, parents are so worried about their children's safety that they encourage their children to stay indoors.

As we all work longer hours and have busier lives, it is increasingly rare for families to eat a balanced meal together round a table. Children are also surrounded by adverts for unhealthy snack food and fizzy drinks. Even if they are naturally thin, it is clearly a challenge for many children to stay fit and healthy.

What can schools and parents do to halt this epidemic? Firstly, parents can try to develop a more active lifestyle for themselves and their children. They can arrange family outings to sports centres or take their children walking, swimming, cycling - whatever is available in their neighbourhood. They should limit TV and computer time and instead enrol their children in some kind of structured physical activity such as football, badminton, dance or martial arts. As parents, we also need to ensure that the whole family is eating healthily. We should take time to prepare fresh food with our children and eat together regularly as a family. Unhealthy snacks and drinks should be kept to a minimum.

Physical activity and healthy eating should also be promoted by schools. Children need to be educated about the importance of healthy eating and exercise. The good news is that many schools are taking notice of the problem and cookery classes and physical education lessons are becoming more common. School canteens are also increasingly trying to server children more nutritious, balanced meals.

However, for the moment, the number of overweight children is still rising all over the world and most of these children will grow up to be obese adults. More and more children are suffering from diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and high blood pressure - all caused by being overweight. What is more, obese children are often teased and self-conscious about their appearance. If we want our children to lead long and fulfilling lives, we must encourage them to make healthy lifestyle choices and that includes leading the way ourselves.
