The Gallery’s Young Girl Reading—a representation of a demure model in a lemon-yellow dress seated at a window ledge, a book in one upraised hand—has always been loosely associated with the fantasy figures on formal terms. On the one hand, compelling evidence supported a connection between the two. The dimensions of the Gallery’s picture (approximately 81 × 65 cm) are identical, or nearly so, to those of the fantasy figures. Its palette, dominated by bold yellow, mauve, and rose, recalls their coloring; its energetic, gestural brushwork reappears throughout the canvases; its costume, with its elaborate collar, evokes the elegant masquerade dress of the other models. Yet on the other, Young Girl Reading retreats resolutely into her book, appearing remote and absorbed, whereas the other fantasy figures are frontally turned toward the viewer.

John the Baptist sits in the wilderness. With his left arm he holds a staaf. His right hand points to heaven, perhaps to indicate that baptism is the first step to the kingdom of heaven.
On John's head is a laurel wreath and with his left hand he holds a bunch of grapes. These attributes may have been added later to change John into Bacchus, the god of wine.
The painting was probably not made by the master himself but by one of his students in his workshop, Francesco Melzi. It was later transfered from panel to canvas.

The panels form two of the three sections of the predecease of a large triptych painted in 1437 by Fra Angelico for the Chapel of St Niccolo in the Church of S. Dominic in Peruvian. The other parts of the altarpiece, dispersed in the 19th century, are preserved in the National Gallery of Umbra in Peruvian.

In the painting we can see that the woman Salome is dragging the plate of John's head. A man with a sword puts John's head in the disk. Another old woman is staring at John's head.
