This article is about residential schools in Canada. It is an informative writing piece done by CBC news. CBC is a very reliable article source as it is the home to the news across Canada, and has a lot of credibility. In the 19th century Canada was home to many first nation boys and girls. It was a nation full of native pride. First nations were the people who founded our land and created the country we call home today. However, in 1931 the peak of the residential school system was present. Residential schools were founded by our catholic priests and nuns who wanted to take the indian out of the child. The Canadian government had these institutions and were funding them to take the indian out of the child. However, the priests and worker did not just do this, they beat and abused the children and took them from their homes and families. Stephen Harper then funded a program to give money to abused families in residential school families, and apologized to the first nations. (see column to the right.)

Residential schools are awful, it was truly the holocaust of Canada. Not that the death rates were anywhere near those in Europe, however the schools were trying to change the children and implemented Canadian values and diminish Indian traditions. I believe that this was an awful institution and the government handled it very badly, as they snatched the children from their homes and families and changed the child. You cannot abuse a child no matter what, especially if you are a stranger trying to change his beliefs in the first place. 

This is a very significant event and part of our nations history. Canada will forever be in debt of the first nations not just for their actions pre colonization. But for the residential schools and what we did to them inside of the schools. Nobody or especially country should try to take away ones religion, beliefs, and traditions. As Canada today is known as am accepting country and a nation where one can be themselves it is important to use this experience and historical event to make sure we do not repeat such a blasphemous act and make sure everybody is safe and can be whoever they want nationwide.

I believe the only way to have changed it for the better was have the first nation parents be able to maintain contact with their children so that the children gain a understanding of their family.
