"Don't be a fool, Bilbo Baggins!" he said to himself, "thinking of dragons and all that outlandish nonsense at your age!" So he put on an apron, lit fires, boiled water, and washed up. Then he had a nice little breakfast in the kitchen before turning out the dining room. By that time the sun was shining; and the front door was open, letting in a warm spring breeze. Bilbo began to whistle loudly and to forget about the night before. In fact, he was just sitting down to a nice little second breakfast in the dining room by the open window, when in walked Gandalf."

Both texts do a good job of showing Bilbo's personality and his lack of confidence in himself. However, being able to see his face and actions in the graphic novel helps show it even more. This helps to show that he is an anti-hero because as we see him react to the idea of going on this adventure the reader can see that there isn't anything special about him like an average hero. The reader can also see at other times in the graphic novel how the other characters doubt Gandalf's choice and wonder why he would choose someone like Bilbo.

They did say I could pick and choose my own share; and I think I would choose this, if they all took the rest!" All the same he had an uncomfortable feeling that the picking and choosing had not really been meant to include this marvelous gem, and that trouble would yet come of it."

Once again in this part of the story, the graphic novel better portrays the feelings Bilbo is experiencing and how his character has changed since the beginning of the text. Both texts use mostly the same words so having the pictures that the graphic novel gives really adds to the understanding of the reader. It helps the reader see the change in Bilbo's personality and how he has gone from being clueless and following the dwarves no matter what to now being secretive and greedy.

At the end of the text, both versions do a great job of describing the result of this adventure in Bilbo's life. They both describe how things are not really the same anymore now that he has returned and how people don't see him the same or give him the respect they once did. The graphic novel brings it to the next level because of the images. It makes it better by giving the reader that extra detail that shows what his life is like now and how really he is okay with it.

One major strength of the graphic novel is obviously the images. Pictures can add so much more the a story by giving it a visual understanding as well as the descriptions. There are many times that the pictures add to the feel of the story but one specific example is when Bilbo first meets Gollum. Because he is a fictional creature it can be hard to imagine what he would look like especially when the words don't give very much description of his appearance. In the image above from page 45 of the graphic novel, the reader is able to see how creepy Gollum looks. On the other hand, because images are such a big part of graphic novels, sometimes the word descriptions can lack the detail that is shown in the pictures.

Unlike the graphic novel, a major strength of the original text is the amount of detail and description you get from the text itself. Because there are no pictures for the reader to see the text needs to be specific so the reader is able to create the image in their head that the author is trying to get across. When there is so much detail in the text it can make imagining the story very entertaining like when Bilbo first finds the treasure and it says, "Suddenly Bilbo's arm went towards it drawn by its enchantment. His small hand would not close about it, for it was a large and heavy gem; but he lifted it, shut his eyes, and put it in his deepest pocket." Just from these two sentences alone the reader is brought into Bilbo's world and can easily picture these magical gems. A weakness of the original text could be that without a picture the story is longer and can be harder to understand if not given the right information.
