         <description><![CDATA[<div>An academic argument is an <strong>evidence-based defense of a non-obvious position</strong> on a complex issue.<br>Unlike a <a href="http://jerz.setonhill.edu/writing/creative1/personal-essays/"><mark>personal essay</mark></a><mark>,</mark> which can draw on the writer’s experience and values, an academic essay must draw on credible evidence.</div><ul><li>You might be asked to respond to a text by doing a close reading — a careful study of the words the author chose to use;</li><li>You might be assigned a research paper that involves citing direct quotations or statistics from peer-reviewed academic journals.</li><li>An academic argument is not a squabble, a difference of opinions, or an attorney’s courtroom statement.
