The National Institute of Mental Health Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) website summarized the characteristics of Autism which includes social communication and interaction challenges, as well as restrictive and repetitive behaviors. It sheds light on how individuals with ASD may struggle with keeping eye contact, listening, and responding to their peers. They may have difficulties in sharing emotions, seeing things from another perspective, and engaging in conversations. Individuals with ASD may have unusual ways of saying things and may not adjust their behavior according to different social situations. The article also notes that people with ASD may have specific interests, such as focusing on specific topics or activities, and may show repetitive behaviors like repeating words. They may be particularly sensitive to changes in routines or sensory input, such as lights, sounds, or textures. Even with these challenges, people with ASD may possess strengths, including strong memory, detailed learning abilities, and talents in subjects like math, art, and music.

https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/autism-spectrum-disorders-asd

Possible causes of the Disability

The National Institute of Mental Health Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) website explains that the exact cause of Autism is not fully understood. Most research suggests that a combination of genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of ASD. It mentions that some genetic conditions, such as Down syndrome or Fragile X syndrome, may increase the likelihood of developing ASD. Other potential risk factors include having a sibling with ASD, older parental age, and low birth weight. However, the article claims that these factors are associated with an increased likelihood rather than being direct causes of ASD.

https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/autism-spectrum-disorders-asd

This Help Guide website The article provides an overview of the diverse treatment options available for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), emphasizing that these treatments aim to support the child's development, not to cure the disorder.

1. Behavior Therapy:

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is one of the most common therapies, focusing on teaching target behaviors while minimizing undesirable ones. It involves promoting positive behaviors and using consequences for negative behaviors

Early Start Denver Model (ESDM): Targets children aged 12 to 48 months, using play-based methods to improve social interactions, communication, and cognitive skills.

Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT): A play-based method that focuses on improving key skills like motivation, self-management, and social interactions.

Discrete Trial Training (DTT): A more structured approach than PRT, breaking down skills into smaller steps and reinforcing each step as the child progresses.

2. Speech-Language Therapy:

Focuses on improving both verbal and nonverbal communication skills, including speech rhythm, vocabulary, sign language, and understanding social cues

3. Parents are encouraged to be actively involved, follow through with at-home strategies, and seek professional guidance in choosing the most appropriate treatments for their child. The article stresses that while ASD cannot be cured, these treatments help children develop critical skills, manage symptoms, and lead fulfilling lives, leveraging their strengths and addressing their challenges.

Working with a student who has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in a future classroom would require thoughtful planning, individualized strategies, and a supportive, inclusive teaching approach. (Multicultural Education).IEPs are a huge part of knowing how to teach students the curriculum in a way that they can process the information. Staying to a strict clear schedule will help students with Autism stay on task as they get used to the process of the school day. When one thing is thrown off in the day it may set the student's whole mood and day off.
